Gossip

Apologia

This paper is an editorial opinion. The Bible doesn’t deal much with gossip except to show Yehovah’s hatred of those who practice this, and how sinful and destructive it truly is. This document is therefore for readers to just consider; I don’t pretend that it falls into the category of Biblical Truth. The document also hasn’t been edited; I expect that you will find errors in it. (If you let me know, I can correct the errors.)

Leviticus 19:16 Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.

Proverbs 11:13 A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

Proverbs 18:8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

Proverbs 20:19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

Proverbs 26:20 Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

Proverbs 26:22 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

Definition

Gossip: Any form of communication in which:

  • true or false negative, private information is communicated for entertainment
  • true or false negative, private information is communicated that results in self-aggrandizement (making self look more important)
  • true, partial or false negative, private information is communicated that lowers the estimation of another person or destroys a person’s reputation
  • true, partial or false negative, private information is communicated that spreads hurt feelings, one’s own bitternesses, and/or rancor to others
  • none-of-your-business questions are asked as if the one asking has the right and even responsibility to ask those questions
  • true, partially true, or false information is communicated or asked that adversely affects relationships, raises suspicions, brings hurt feelings, and/or harms trust

Those who gossip normally painlessly sow discord, while keeping (or seeming to keep) ‘squeaky clean,’ offering no real personal investment in and responsibility for solutions to the problems that have been raised. They sometimes think of themselves as doing a service by informing others. Their words leave damage without benefit and are usually harmful, sometimes even causing death. They are often very successful in killing relationships that have been long-standing and very strong.

The following will examine made-up cases to consider whether each is a case of gossip using a proposed checklist.

“Is a person gossiping if information is passed that another is doing monetarily poorly, and that others have helped?”

Suppose a person, like Paul in Corinthians, is communicating with the Corinthian Saints that the Saints in Jerusalem are monetarily suffering, and they need help. Other congregations have helped, and Paul desires that the folks in Corinth (where they are monetarily doing much better than most other congregations) will help the poor Saints. He therefore communicates that to them, and they respond. Consider the checklist to see if it is gossip:

Checklist
Information
Is it true, partially true, or false information?
Is it negative, private information that is communicated for entertainment?
Is it negative, private information communicated for self-aggrandizement?
Is it true, partial or false negative, private information that lowers the estimation of the other person or destroys the person’s reputation?
Is it true, partial or false negative, private information that spreads bitterness, hurt feelings, rancor (violent anger), and/or other relationship killers?
Is it in the form of ‘none-of-your-business’ questions that are asked as if the one asking has the right and even responsibility to ask those questions?
Is it true, partially true, or false information that is communicated or asked that adversely affects relationships, raises suspicions, brings hurt feelings, and/or harms trust?
Is the communication potentially beneficial without any harm?

The following is an example of a filled-in table:

Checklist
Information
Is it true, partially true, or false information? It is true information.
Is it negative, private information that is communicated for entertainment? It isn’t private information, and it isn’t for entertainment. It can be viewed as negative, but not regarding the actions and behaviours of those involved. It shows a lack, not a negative behaviour.
Is it negative, private information communicated for self-aggrandizement? No; the person telling it is not made to look larger and more important because of it.
Is it true, partial or false negative, private information that lowers the estimation of the other person or destroys the person’s reputation? It does not do that. Rather, it describes that the person is having a financial difficulty, and raises the reputation of those who are suffering for doing right.
Is it true, partial or false negative, private information that spreads bitterness, hurt feelings, rancor (violent anger), and/or other relationship killers? No, it is instead useful for helping and for increasing bonds of relationship.
Is it in the form of ‘none-of-your-business’ questions that are asked as if the one asking has the right and even responsibility to ask those questions? No.
Is it true, partially true, or false information that is communicated or asked that adversely affects relationships, raises suspicions, brings hurt feelings, and/or harms trust? No.
Is the communication potentially beneficial without any harm? It is; if the group’s financial fall is too great, others who care can then intervene; also, the declaration that others have intervened is beneficial information.

Thus, we have a principle: Every communication in which a person participates must be for benefit, not for detriment. The above case was for benefit.

“Is a person gossiping if that person warns another that a person not present is participating in some evil practice?”

Suppose that Johnny calls Sammy to tell him that Billy is lying about Sally. Sammy knows Billy and Sally. Sammy wonders why Johnny is saying these things to him about Billy. Sammy knows that Johnny and Billy were good friends only a week ago, and Sammy has not heard anything from Sally. Sammy asks Johnny how he knows that Billy is saying these things, and Johnny says that his sources are good, and that he heard how hurt Sally is. Is this gossip?

Consider the checklist that Sammy can use:

Checklist
Information
Is it true, partially true, or false information? Sammy has no clue. (That is a bad sign.)
Is it negative, private information that is communicated for entertainment? Sammy has no clue. (That is a bad sign.)
Is it negative, private information communicated for self-aggrandizement? Sammy doesn’t feel right about this; it does make Johnny look bigger; Sammy did not find any comment from Johnny indicating that Johnny had done or said anything to help mollify the situation; Johnny is talking, not benefiting.
Is it true, partial or false negative, private information that lowers the estimation of the other person or destroys the person’s reputation? This communication, if believed, will greatly ruin the reputation of Billy, and could do great harm to Sally.
Is it true, partial or false negative, private information that spreads bitterness, hurt feelings, rancor (violent anger), and/or other relationship killers? It absolutely does this.
Yes.
Is the communication potentially beneficial without any harm? It is not of any benefit, since Sammy can do nothing about it that is good; it will do harm, and the harm will be great.

This, therefore, rates as gossip.

“Is a person gossiping if that person warns another person that a third person is a gossip?”

Suppose that Johnny emails Sammy warning Sammy that Billy is gossiping about Sammy. Is this friendly warning gossip? Use the checklist:

Checklist
Information
Is it true or false information? Sammy doesn’t know. Even if Sammy knew, that still wouldn’t help.
Is it communicated for the purpose of entertainment? Sammy doesn’t know. Sammy has no clue regarding Johnny’s motives.
Is it communicated for self-aggrandizement? Sammy doesn’t know why Johnny is communicating this. It appears to be a friendly warning, but Sammy is bothered, because he has a working conscience.
Does its communication lower the estimation of the other person or destroy the person’s reputation? It will destroy the reputation of Billy if Sammy believes it. If Sammy believes it, Sammy will become very angry at Billy.
Does it spread bitterness, ranker (violent anger), and other relationship killers? Absolutely, yes.
Is the communication potentially beneficial without any harm? It absolutely is not; this type of communication always causes harm.

Thus, it is gossip.

How could Sammy have responded to Johnny in this email communication? One good way to respond is to ask questions of the following variety shown in the email:

Johnny, I received your email about Billy. How did you hear that Billy said what he said? Who told you? Secondly, what did you say to the person who told you, unless you were the witness? If you were the witness, what did you say to Billy? What am I supposed to do with this information? I do not know it firsthand, and I am not permitted to react to the testimony of one even if you are an eyewitness. What would you like me to do with this information? Finally, what are your plans to deal with your source?

If you know that the person will respond with belligerence (that is, will become angry, and will throw back words and actions of anger) and feel insulted by you, you do not have to respond in the way shown above; silence is much wiser. Yet, if you realize that it is worth the risk, including blowing what there is in the relationship to pieces, and you do not desire to relate to that person under that circumstance, ‘have at it.’

When Does Gossip Most Often Occur?

It normally happens in long-term relationships, where the parties involved feel the most relaxed and free to express whatever is on their hearts.  The parties then begin to express much more than beneficial facts; they express fears, suspicions, frustrations, slants, and every other form of insecurities leading to ‘flushing mouth disease.’

Gossip is terribly infectious. It leads to folks re-quoting others with embellishments that are often total changes in what occurred.

A violent part of gossip is the setting of motives. Whenever anyone determines the motives of another, that person is God! (Glory!) Only God can know the real motive and intent of any person. He alone can read minds, and He even knows what a person doesn’t know about that person. Thus, be sure to bow down to anyone who tells you the motives of another, and worship him.

How Should One Handle a Person Who is Inquisitive?

Some folks ask, observe, and pry their way into others. They keep questions rolling, observing body language, and drilling until they hit pay dirt. How should they be diplomatically handled?

One way is to say to the person, “That is a good question! You can ask so and so next time you see the person!” If the person is insistent, you can then ask, “Why do you want to know?” That is a cut-off question, because now, you are inspecting that person and that person’s motive straight from the admission of the person.

Folks will gossip in questions. “Did you know about this? I just learned such and such!” If this is in an email, a good way is to delete it, and behave as if it went into limboland, cyberspace.

Another good response is to say, “That really bothers you, doesn’t it! I can tell that it really concerns you!” That will force the person to explain why it is so important. During that time, no gossip is occurring, and the other person is in a sweat.

Another way is to respond, “I think we had better keep our noses out of it.”

The idea is to refuse to be dragged into the gossip chain.

When folks are speaking together in person, diplomacy is far more difficult, and requires practice. It is excellent when properly done. Sometimes, changing the conversation on a fluke is wise. For example, suppose a person is at a party, and is in conversation with the national gossip. The person starts to ask questions. If you see an opportunity at the party, you can deftly say, “Oh, excuse me! I need to help with that table….” And take off.

“Did you know that Billy is saying such and such about you?”

A good response is, “As long as he is picking on me, he is leaving some poor soul alone!” A person who has any strength and sense won’t mind being the topic of gossip if that will relieve another who doesn’t have strength and gossip fortitude from being tormented. Another response is this: “Well, darn, I didn’t know I was that important!”

Thinking before filtering is a great error. Those who are wise and who hear another beginning to do this will smoothly change the topic in order to ‘cover the nakedness of’ the other person. If the person is a thinker, the person will later realize what was done, and will appreciate the move.

The following is a Tribulation text (as all the Proverbs are), warning how to keep from stupidly being killed:

Proverbs 17:9 He who covers a transgression seeks love. And he who repeats a matter separates very friends.

To show just how evil this is, consider this End Times Proverbs text:

Proverbs 6:16 Yehovah hates these six things. Indeed, seven are an abomination unto Him:

  • A proud look
  • A lying tongue
  • Hands that shed innocent blood
  • A heart that devises wicked imaginations
  • Feet that are swift in running to mischief [violence]
  • A false witness that speaking lies
  • He who sows discord among brethren.

Several of these are persons, not acts. Yehovah hates every person who sows discord among brethren. There is no exception. No person in that category can possibly be born of God doing that. Sowing discord is necessarily always in the form of gossip, and it is combined with bitterness. Pride is always participant in gossip and bitterness. No person can possibly have bitterness of the evil type without pride; every gossip shows pride. Being hated by Yehovah doesn’t sound too good.

Some folks gossip with the idea of benefiting. They really think in their perverted little minds that they are doing good. If they were, they would be part of the solution, and not diagnosticians.

If a person gives his opinion or comment on a situation, is that gossip?

Suppose that Johnny gives his opinion to Sammy that a particular doctor isn’t a good doctor, because Johnny didn’t like him. Johnny says to Sammy, “The doctor didn’t spend any time with me, and I don’t think that he really knows what he is doing.” Is this gossip? Consider the checklist:

Checklist
Information
Is it true or false information? Sammy doesn’t know.
Is it communicated for the purpose of entertainment? There is no evidence that this is for entertainment.
Is it communicated for self-aggrandizement? Sammy doesn’t know; Johnny may give the impression that he is expert on many things; it would be, in that case. Otherwise, it may or may not be.
Does its communication lower the estimation of the other person or destroy the person’s reputation? Yes. (That doesn’t mean that it is false.)
Does it spread bitterness, ranker (violent anger), and other relationship killers? It doesn’t, in this case; it isn’t a personal relationship.
Is the communication potentially beneficial without any harm? It is potentially beneficial, but then, it may be false, and even harmful. That doctor may have done well with others.

This may not fit the idea of gossip, but it still should be taken as one person’s opinion, and not as fact. If several (who do not know Johnny) testify that the doctor isn’t the best, that may be wise to consider.

The Case of the Bad Doctor

Suppose that Johnny needs surgery. He asks Sammy about Doctor Gutt. Sammy tells Johnny that he has heard other folks that have used this doctor speak of him in a negative way. In Sammy’s mind, his intent is to benefit Johnny. Is this gossip?

Checklist
Information
Is it true or false information? Sammy doesn’t know.
Is it communicated for the purpose of entertainment? No.
Is it communicated for self-aggrandizement? That is unlikely.
Does its communication lower the estimation of the other person or destroy the person’s reputation? It certainly lowers the estimation of Doctor Gutt, and it could destroy his reputation if it were spread widely. On the other hand, Doctor Gutt may be destroying his own reputation.
Does it spread bitterness, ranker (violent anger), and other relationship killers? There is no indication that these folks have a relationship with Doctor Gutt. This might prevent it.
Is the communication potentially beneficial without any harm? It is potentially beneficial, and it doesn’t have to have harm if it is true. It could greatly lower the confidence that Sammy has in the doctor when surgery requires confidence. That would be harmful.

There is nothing wrong with obtaining recommendations for a profession and a person in that profession. Some web sites are dedicated to gathering testimonies from various sources regarding professions including medicine. So often, one person can receive excellent treatment, and another what the person considers terrible treatment from the same professional. Still, obtaining recommendations is not wrong. It is right, however, to go straight to the sources (the previous patients). Listening to a third party describe these recommendations isn’t the right way to go about this.

Is Discussing a Relationship Gossip?

Suppose Johnny and Sammy are emailing each other. Johnny has a problem with Billy, and tells Sammy about the problem. Sammy writes back, and gives Johnny ideas of how to be wise, how to benefit, and how to handle communications with Billy that if taken, may truly lead to a better relationship and solution to the problem between Johnny and Billy. Is this gossip?

Checklist
Information
Is it true or false information? Sammy won’t know, but if he is wise, he will temporarily consider that Johnny’s testimony is true for the sake of the email conversation.
Is it communicated for the purpose of entertainment? No. Johnny has expressed frustration. He is concerned.
Is it communicated for self-aggrandizement? No.
Does its communication lower the estimation of the other person or destroy the person’s reputation? Sammy easily can refuse to believe what Johnny said about Billy while advising Johnny; that is being disinterested.
Does it spread bitterness, ranker (violent anger), and other relationship killers? No; it does the opposite. The idea is to help Johnny do right in his relationship with Billy.
Is the communication potentially beneficial without any harm? It is as long as Johnny doesn’t later use it as a weapon. (That is a risk that is usually worth taking.)

It is not gossip. It is actually a good way to hone each other in relationship propriety.

Is forwarding an email to a third party gossip if the email contains anything pertaining to the third party without the third party knowing that the email was communicated?

Suppose Johnny sends the following email to Sammy:

From Billy to Johnny

Johnny, I received your note. I really resent what Sammy said at the event. It wasn’t true, and he had no right to say it. I find Sammy to always be saying things like that; he has hurt many folks.

This is indeed gossip.

Is Prayer a Potential Form of Gossip?

Johnny sees Sammy, and describes that Billy is having a difficulty. Johnny then prays, and gives information about Billy that Billy would not want known. The information he gives isn’t pertinent to the solution, but is used so that Sammy will fully understand everything that Johnny knows (or thinks he knows) about Billy and situation. Is this gossip?

Checklist
Information
Is it true or false information? Sammy doesn’t know if it is true, partially true, or completely false. It probably won’t be completely false.
Is it communicated for the purpose of entertainment? Most public prayers are. No matter what folks think about public prayers, most are for entertainment, and not for the real situation. One can tell; think of how little affected the one praying and those hearing are by the prayer. A prayer that is not for entertainment will be heartfelt by all concerned.
Is it communicated for self-aggrandizement? Yes, it is. No matter what Johnny thinks he is doing, he is still bragging about how much he knows of the situation. That is self-aggrandizement.
Does its communication lower the estimation of the other person or destroy the person’s reputation? It certainly does.
Does it spread bitterness, ranker (violent anger), and other relationship killers? Yes. It depends on the hearer and the wisdom of the hearer, but in normal hands, yes.
Is the communication potentially beneficial without any harm? No. It can be very harmful.

Prayer is often used as a vehicle for gossip. Missionary letters home can be used the same way.

There are valid and good reasons for group prayer:

  • If the prayer is for the group so that the group itself can be beneficial and/or withstand persecution
  • If the prayer involves all in the group regarding another for whom the prayer is being given, all in the group desiring to benefit that person
  • If the person praying desires witnesses of the contents of the prayer so that the details will be recognized if Yehovah grants the prayer, the witnesses being or not being in faith

Is a Request for Prayer by the Person Present a Potential Outlet for Gossip?

Johnny asks Sammy for prayer, because Johnny is struggling. Johnny says, “Sammy, pray for me; I am struggling and frustrated. Billy is spreading rumours, Sally now hates me, and every time I get together with them, I am miserable. They make me feel so uncomfortable. I don’t like the way they talk about others, and they are mean to me and to others.” Is this gossip? What Johnny is doing can easily be a means of gossip. The issue now lies with Sammy. What he does with it makes the difference. Does he give wise counsel to Johnny? Does he believe Johnny? Prayer and gossip can easily be the same thing.

When folks are quick to place blame on others for many things, they, themselves are bitter, and they are gossips, especially when they are Teflon. No accusation of wrongdoing on their parts ever sticks to them; they are always innocent.

When folks are quick to call others liars (even if they are), they themselves are confessing being a liar. Self-deceit is the first step toward bitterness, and it is what makes folks unable to see truth. Even when confronted with the truth, they accuse others as if they are looking in a mirror, because all they see are themselves. If they were to see the very image of God on others, they might see Truth. Instead, they only see themselves, and that in the best light, while they see others as what they themselves are.

Can an Accusation be a Way of Pumping a Person for Gossip?

Johnny is conversing with Sammy. Johnny says, “Well, you were rude to Billy, and he is still hurt over it.” Sammy answers, “I was not! Billy deserved everything I said because he did this, this and this!” Johnny then tells Sally and Billy what Sammy said.

A common practice with news folks is to start with a false premise so that the responder will feel obligated to expound, defend, and give information that he or she otherwise would not have given. It is brilliant. A good answer would be, “Where did you learn that? Next question, please.”

A Person Asks for an Opinion

Johnny and Sammy and emailing. Johnny asks Sammy for his opinion on a situation that involves Billy and Sally. Johnny says, “Billy and Sally are trying to get the fellowship hall painted green, and they are saying that any other color is just not intelligent. What do you think?” Is this gossip, or can this introduce gossip?

Checklist
Information
Is it true or false information? Sammy doesn’t know.
Is it communicated for the purpose of entertainment? Not in this case.
Is it communicated for self-aggrandizement? It could; Sammy doesn’t know.
Does its communication lower the estimation of the other person or destroy the person’s reputation? Yes, it does, and it certainly could, because Johnny worded it in such a way that it makes Billy and Sally seem narrow-minded and even potentially belligerent.
Does it spread bitterness, ranker (violent anger), and other relationship killers? Yes; if Sammy believes this, and likes blue, it could make for hard feelings and kill relationships.
Is the communication potentially beneficial without any harm? Because we had to think so long on this, the answer is that it can produce harm. The benefit of the communication is uncertain.

Thus, it is gossip. This has to do with the way Johnny worded it. Consider the following communication to see the difference:

“I heard several others describe their desire that the fellowship hall be painted green. They do not seem to consider other colors as potentially beneficial. Do you have a color in mind, and if so, can you describe good reasons for considering other colors?” In this conversation, it may be that the undescribed person used to be an interior decorator, and has good reasons for a particular color choice. The point, then, is often how a communication is worded. If the topic is the color of the paint, and not the individuals involved, that isn’t gossip. It is totally impossible to gossip about a paint color.

When Johnny tells Sammy his opinions of what occurred, Sammy will be wise if he starts by telling Johnny that he (Sammy) wasn’t there, and doesn’t know what transpired from God’s perspective. Sammy, then, will not assume that everything that Johnny said is “God’s truth.” Then, Sammy should concentrate on Johhny’s behaviour and responses, not on the behaviour and responses of the third part. That way, Sammy is being a good friend to Johnny. (Johnny won’t like it.)

Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Defensiveness in conversations is the worst way to proper gossip and to kill relationships. The classic novels portray this so well. Being defensive is only beneficial under the rarest of circumstances. Those who are wise will not defend, but will consider the other persons (I am speak of the accusers), and will seek to be of benefit to their mitigation of bitterness if at all possible. (In far too many cases, it isn’t possible, because persons with bitterness feel gravely insulted if anyone seeks to try to alleviate the bitterness; it is their baby! It is their child! It is the very foundation of the justice upon which they have stood! Speaking against the bitterness in any way is as if you are slapping the person across the face and making the very reasons for the bitterness seem minor.

Do not defend yourself in these conversations, and do not defend those whom you love or those whom you don’t love. Defending those whom you love will act as a perverted proof that you know the badness of their character; their character should stand on its own. Those who defend the ones they love the most are doing what appears to be a cover up. Defenses always feed gossip chains! Gossip cannot survive silence; it must always be communicating. Defending is a form of communication; it is gossip food.

One accusation of a very bitter person who is gossiping is this: “You are on so-and-so’s side! You have taken that person’s position!” Then, that person communicates this to others who are gullible. A gullible person is one who takes information as if it is truth and doesn’t even look to see if it is truth. No person can be both wise and gullible at the same time:

Psalms 19:7 The Teaching of Yehovah is perfect, restoring the being. The testimony of Yehovah is certain, making the gullible wise.

A gullible person is a sucker.

There are some who are mentally retarded; their learning curve is very low compared to the general population. They are gullible; they believe what folks say because they respect them. If they are taught the Teaching of Yehovah, however, they can exceed in wisdom far above geniuses.

Bitterness is a baby that a person loves. Don’t touch that baby if the person is showing this symptom. Don’t! You will get burned.

There are times when ignoring (that is, not responding to) a person’s bitterness is very wise. There are times when it is not wise. Experience will teach the difference.

The Pajama Case

Sally’s daughter Judi just had a baby: her second one. Sally’s best friend is Susie. Susie and Sally are talking. Lilly knows both Sally and Susie from school days, though Lilly isn’t in regular contact with Judi or Sally. Lilly asks Susie if it was necessary for Lilly to purchase a gift for the new grandbaby. (The answer was not specific.) This conversation was later repeated to Sally. Sally became upset. She showed that she was upset with Lilly. This gave Lilly the impression that she did need to give a gift to Judi for her baby to avoid hurt. Lilly obtained a gift, and took it to Judi, being accompanied by Susie. Judi took the gift, but gave no response of thankfulness; she was very cold. Had gossip taken place?

There is no true proof that gossip occurred, but there was also no reason that Judi should respond the way she did unless something had been said. Gossip itself is not the real problem; the recipient of gossip is the real problem in cases like this. Anyone who receives gossip, then behaves differently on the basis of gossip is the wrongdoer that does damage as great as the gossip and gossiper themselves.

The best way to react to gossip is one of the following (and there can be other ways):

  • Ignore it
  • Place it back into the craw of the one speaking it: that is, cause the gossiper to be responsible for doing benefit, since that person is the reporter. A reporter who only reports and doesn’t help (if help is possible) is an evil person even if the person works for a newspaper.

Man and Wife Gossip

Johnny and Sally are married. Johnny tells Sally information that is gossip if it goes beyond their conversation to the ears of others. Do husbands and wives have the right to tell each other whatever they want about others? Husbands and wives have responsibilities. Folks who focus on rights never focus on responsibilities. Folks who focus on responsibilities rarely mention rights. Those who focus on responsibilities have sense; those who focus on rights are set for bitterness. Husbands and wives should theoretically be able to speak with each other without boundaries; this isn’t real life, unfortunately. They must be diplomatic with each other in most cases. If a husband knows that saying something about another will affect his wife in such a way that she will have a hard time being normal with that person, he doesn’t need to say anything unless his wife will be in danger.

The Obvious

Some forms of gossip are just obvious. Some gossipers are just obvious. They speak in a different way, they physically position themselves in a different way, and they move their eyes in a particular way that advertises that they are gossiping. Since this document is for the purpose of communication forms that might be far more difficult to spot, I will not try to cover the many obvious gossip scenarios.

Men Versus Women

Many are convinced that women are more gossipy than men. If this were true, it would be based on an obvious observation: women communicate more than men in many cultures. The worst gossipers are not necessarily women. Men early learn to gossip in school. Their type of gossip is more deadly. Entire wars are run on campaigns of gossip: spreading fear, rumours and lies about enemies. If truth were spoken during wars, some wars would fall apart.

The Attack of Cowards

Gossip is a form of attack. It is used by cowards, persons with low or non-existent morality, and the worst scum of society. Gutter-bound incurable drunks who beg for money for alcohol are far higher on the morality level than gossips. Yet, gossips are found among the highest-ranking persons in society. High-society gossip is deadly entertainment; entire magazines are dedicated and devoted to it. It is Biblically worse than blood sports done in the Roman arenas. Yet, it is considered an acceptable practice by a large majority of the population, including many who are fervent and dedicated churchgoers. How many sermons per year are dedicated to defining and decrying gossip?

It is masked and morphed into many forms. One form is anger. The following is an example.

Fury Expressed

Johnny is communicating with Sammy by email. Johnny writes the following email:

Sammy,

How could you listen to Billy? You know that Billy is a liar. Billy has always been a liar! You don’t know what Billy did to Sally, and I can’t tell you that because I was told in confidence. I assure you, Billy is a liar, and you are siding with Billy! Can’t you see who your real friends are? How can you take sides with Billy? Billy did terrible things to Sally! You need to wake up!

Several things should be evident about this email. First, Johnny is furious with Billy, and Johnny is now becoming furious with Sammy just because Sammy won’t take Johnny’s word about Billy. Sammy doesn’t have Johnny’s information; yet Johnny expects Sammy to take Johnny’s word that Billy is a terrible person and a liar. Johnny is a violent gossip, and a very bitter person. Yet, Johnny has no clue that he is both of these. Johnny feels more like a victim—a victim of Sammy (for not believing him without evidence).

Johnny is outraged that Sammy could even listen to Billy. As far as Johnny is concerned, even listening to Billy is a great moral evil on Sammy’s part! Johnny’s bitterness is so great, that it will destroy Johnny. He will physically be ruined!

Johnny’s accusation that Billy is a liar is pure and open gossip. (Even if Billy is the world’s worst liar, Sammy doesn’t know this or have evidence of this; thus, Johnny is gossiping. Gossip is worse than lying, in the Bible; gossip always involves lies or unproven half-truths.

The statement, “You don’t know what Billy did to Sally, and I can’t tell you that because I was told in confidence” is another form of gossip. It is very self-aggrandizing (showing a pride level on the part of the speaker that is far above normal evil pride). It is also what I call, “junior high,” meaning that it is the type of communication that mean-spirited and evil junior high students (grades seven through nine) would say and use. Many adults never advance in their sense, justice, or social skills beyond junior high.

Next comes the statement, “I assure you, Billy is a liar, and you are siding with Billy!” Sammy will be very wise to soon have nothing to do with Johnny. Johnny is using a friendship to twist the arm of a friend into violating every principle of proper justice. The whole concept of, “Take my word for it!” is a violation of justice.

Here is the twisting and perverting of propriety: “Billy is a liar, and you are siding with Billy!” This accusation is akin to stating, “If you don’t believe me over and above any information from any other source that you might use, you are siding with Billy against all justice!” Thus, a person who desires to judge in the Biblical manner is taking sides by refusing to be biased. Now, that is a lie! It is also gossip, though it is said straight to the other person. (Such an accuser won’t just communicate this to the person involved; that person will tell it to others, and will spread rumours and gossip about the person, about Sammy, in this case.)

The plea comes: “Can’t you see who your real friends are?” This is a plea that is akin to a lawyer and a judge deciding a case while sitting in Joe’s Bar, with the lawyer telling the judge, “Remember who are your friends in the upcoming election!” It is a plea for corruption. It shows the most vile and villainous type of character.

The question, “How can you take sides with Billy?” Is akin to the question, “Have you stopped beating your wife yet?” Sammy hasn’t taken any sides, but Johnny is fully convinced that he has!

Next comes another juicy piece of gossip: “Billy did terrible things to Sally!” Johnny really thinks in his perverted mind that he just kept a confidence and didn’t gossip! After all, he didn’t give details. In truth, he just acted out the worst form of gossip; it is based on accusations without proof or evidence.

The final statement, “You need to wake up!” is true. Sammy does need to wake up. He needs to quit communicating with a bitter and vicious gossip who has degraded himself to the lowest forms of ungodly violence and hatred, and who desires to spread his bitterness to as many as will listen. Yet, Johnny feels very justified in his stands. Many gossips don’t know they are gossips, and would openly state that gossip is a terrible sin!

Another Root Cause of Gossip

Where does gossip like this arise, especially in a person (like Johnny) who would condemn gossipers? It arises from bitterness. While I have mentioned bitterness several times in this document, I have a separate document on bitterness that is designed for children. Some gossip for the entertainment value; others use gossip as a spy would spread lies in order to undermine rivals.

Gossip Paranoia

Gossipers usually fear gossip! They know the power of it; they don’t desire to be targeted. This produces a form of paranoia to which gossipers are very susceptible.

Let folks compare notes on gossipers in such a way that the gossipers know they are being closely viewed and their actions are being weighed, and they will demonstrate this paranoia. It can show itself in the form of strong belligerence and threats, and it can show itself in the form of very strong defensiveness (to try to ‘prove’ that the communications were not gossip, but were truth). Gossipers feel violated when they are topics of conversation in which they are not present.

They can dish it out; they cannot take it.

Can a Gossiper be Born of God?

Some Saints have gossiped. It is quite possible for a person to gossip without realizing that he has done this. That doesn’t make it innocent; it shows that the person was involved in self-deception. The gossiper who didn’t realize that something was gossip hasn’t understood propriety in communications. If the person is indeed born of God, the person will be easily correctable. Every fearer of God has received the love ofthe truth, besides the truth. One who loves the truth will always be correctable. One who defends and fights off correction with something akin to, “I know I am right, and I know I did right in this case” has not received the love of the truth. Find anyone who isn’t correctable, and that person isn’t born of God.

Team Gossips

Gossips love gossips. Folks tend to team up with gossips. They fear each other, because any team member can then gossip about another who is part of the team, and can ruin that person’s reputation. Thus, gossips will do what is necessary to please other members of the gossip team. There is usually one leader; the rest bow to the gossip leader. If even a slight suspicion of disloyalty arises, the gossip leader will quickly spread a rumour about the disloyal person, and that person’s reputation will be destroyed within the group. This is also ‘junior high.’

Because the fear of being badly viewed is so high, any supposed fear of God will quickly be of no consequence compared to the fear of being smeared. The following is an example:

Johnny, Billy and Sally are team gossips. Billy is very bitter against his father, and Sally is bitter against her aunt. Johnny is just bitter against almost everyone, but supposes that he fears God. Johnny is speaking to Sammy; Sammy has nothing to do with gossip, and he also hates bad bitterness. Johnny and Sammy previously got along very well; they both enjoyed looking at the Bible together. Now, in Johnny’s and Sammy’s conversation, Sammy speaks well of Billy’s father. Johnny tells Sammy that Billy’s father is no good. This makes no sense to Sammy; he wonders where Johnny gets this. As their conversation progresses, Johnny becomes more and more angry that Sammy just doesn’t see how bad Billy’s father is. One problem is that Johnny fears Billy gaining a bad view of Johnny. That fear is so strong, that soon Johnny’s and Sammy’s relationship is destroyed. Sammy doesn’t know what happened, or why. Sammy wasn’t defending anyone; he just wouldn’t go along with Johnny’s assessment. Sammy didn’t know that Johnny, Billy and Sally were team gossips. Had he known this, he might have been wiser, and avoided Johnny in the first place.

Work Gossip

Johnny and Sammy are working together in one area of an office, and Billy and Sally work in another. Billy and Sally must code information so that Johnny and Sammy can then process it; this is a normal daily function. Billy and Sally become angry for some reason, and refuse to code up to speed. Johnny and Sammy wait for the coded material to come so that they can do their work. This work slow-down becomes obvious to Johnny and Sammy who may have to work overtime to catch up because of the intentional slow-down of Billy and Sally. Johnny and Sammy discuss what Billy and Sally are doing. Does this constitute gossip? Consider the checklist:

Checklist
Information
Is it true or false information? It is true information.
Is it communicated for the purpose of entertainment? It is not for entertainment; it is part of a work function.
Is it communicated for self-aggrandizement? It is not communicated for this purpose.
Does its communication lower the estimation of the other person or destroy the person’s reputation? The communication itself has no effect on the reputation of Billy or Sally; the communication has to do with proper functioning of the office.
Does it spread bitterness, ranker (violent anger), and other relationship killers? It does not do that as long as Sammy and Johnny keep the communication professional without personal comments about Billy and Sally.
Is the communication potentially beneficial without any harm? It is potentially beneficial; it can be used to participate in solving the disgruntled work slow-down frustration of Billy and Sally.

If in Sammy’s and Johnny’s communication expressions are of disappointment in Billy and Sally and of their manipulation to the system, to others, and to get what they desire, this falls either one way or the other. It is gossip if Sammy and Johnny flame up the anger toward Billy and Sally, and do no benefit. If, on the other hand, Sammy and Johnny carefully consider how they can benefit both the office and Billy and Sally by assuaging (lessening the potency of) Billy’s and Sally’s anger and frustration at being overworked, according to them, this is not gossip. Sammy and Johnny may not be in a position to do anything beneficial, but if they at least do not use words and actions to do harm, and if they desire to be beneficial if they can, they are not gossiping; they are demonstrating proper character.

Overhearing or Witnessing a Personal Attack Conversation

Johnny, Sammy, Billy and Sally are in a crowded room. Billy is expressing very strong words to Sally, describing that she has done wrong and has hurt others. Sammy overhears or witnesses this conversation, and is aware of much more than what he is hearing. He knows that Sally’s behaviour and deportment (how one conducts oneself and carries oneself before others) have been excellent; not merely good, but in every way beyond all reproach. Sammy sees that Sally is not defending herself, and that she is devastated by the strong and accusatory words of Billy. Sally begins to move toward the exit of the gathering. Sammy moves in her direction, and catches up to her. He starts by saying to her that he did overhear the conversation, and that Billy is wrong in his observations about Sally and about the situation. Is this gossip?

As long as Sammy is very careful not to say things that he shouldn’t about Billy, but instead keeps the conversation about Sally and her good conduct, he may freely state that Billy does not properly understand the issues that he spoke with her. That is not gossip. Sammy can be of use to Sally to console her to a little degree in this issue.

Suppose that Sammy tells Sally that Billy is a bitter person who states things and accuses folks without knowing the facts. Is this gossip?

Was Lot Righteous?

Was Lot a Righteous Man?

Introduction

Lot offered his two daughters to a vile crowd. Many have found this unconscionable. Could this man be considered righteous in light of this offer?

The Text Literally Rendered and in Its Entirety

I have given the entire chapter in a literal rendering next so that readers can see what the Hebrew language truly communicates. (The Hebrew word na is a softener, a word that softens a harsh-sounding communication so that it is gentle.) The pertinent verses are 4-9, but the surrounding texts will clarify the situation.

Genesis 19:1 And two of the angels came to Sodom in the evening. And Lot sat in the gate of Sodom. And Lot saw. And he rose up to meet them. And he worshiped faces toward the land. 2And he said, “Behold na, my lords, turn away, na, unto your servant’s house. And lodge. And wash your feet. And ye shall early-rise, and ye shall walk to your way.” And they said, “No! For we will lodge in the boulevard.” 3And he very-much pressed into them. And they turned away unto him. And they came unto his house.

And he made for them a drinking-feast. And he baked matzahs. And they did eat.

4Before they will lay down… And the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded upon the house from young and unto old─all the people from the edge. 5And they called unto Lot. And they said to him, “Where are the men who came unto thee tonight? Send them out unto us. And we have known them!” 6And Lot went out unto them to the opening. And he shut the door after him. 7And he said, “Do not, na, my brethren, do bad. 8Behold, na, two daughters are to me who have not known a man. I will send out, na, them unto you. And do ye to them as is good in your eyes. Only unto these men do not do a thing. For therefore they came into the shadow of my roof!” 9And they said, “Approach yonder!”

And they said, “The one came to sojourn. And he has judged, judging! Now will we do-worse to thee than them!” And they very much pressed into the man─into Lot. And they approached to break the door.

10And the men sent their hand. And they brought Lot unto them to the house. And they shut the door. 11And they smote the men who are the opening of the house with blindness─from small and big. And they wearied to find the opening!

12And the men said unto Lot, “Who else is to thee here?─son in law and thy sons and thy daughters and all who are to thee in the city─send out from the place! 13For we are destroying this place! For their scream is big with the faces of Yehovah, and Yehovah hath sent us to destroy her!”

14And Lot went out. And he spake unto his sons-in-law, takers of his daughters. And he said, “Arise! Go out from this place! For Yehovah is destroying the city!” And he seemed as a joker unto his sons-in-law.

15And as the sunrise ascended, and the angels hastened into Lot saying, “Arise! Take thy wife and two of thy daughters who are found lest thou wilt be consumed in the iniquity of the city!” 16And he what-whated himself. And the men grasped into his hand and into the hand of his wife and into the hand of two of his daughters in the compassion of Yehovah upon him. And they exited him. And they rested him from outside to the city.

17And he was as they exited them outside. And he said, “Escape upon thy being! Peer not behind thee! And stand thou not in all the plain! Escape to the mountain, lest thou wilt be consumed!” 18And Lot said unto them, “Not, na, my lords! 19Behold, na, thy servant found favour in thine eyes. And thou hast magnified thy grace that thou didst with me to keep alive my being. And I, I will not be able to escape to the mountain lest the bad will cling to me, and I will die. 20Behold, na, this city is near to flee there. And he is little. And I will escape, na, there. Is he not little? And my being shall live!” 21And he said unto him, “Behold, I carried thy faces also to speak this to my not overthrowing this city that thou hast spoken. 22Hurry! Escape there! For I will not be able to do a thing until thy coming there!” Therefore he called the name of the city ‘Little’ (Zoar).

23The sun went out upon the land. And Lot came to Zoar. 24And Yehovah rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah sulfur and fire from with Yehovah from the heavens. 25And He overthrew those cities and all the plain and all the inhabitants of the cities and the sprout of the soil.

26And his wife peered from after him. And she became a pillar of salt. 27And Avraham early rose in the morning unto the place where he stood with the faces of Yehovah. 28And he distantly-looked upon the faces of Sodom and Gomorrah and upon all the faces of the land of the plain. And he saw. And behold, the smoke of the country ascended as the smoke of a furnace.

29And he was when God destroyed the cities of the plain. And God remembered Abraham. And He sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow when He overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.

30And Lot ascended from Little. And he dwelt in the mountain. And two of his daughters are with him. For he feared to dwell in Zoar. And He dwelt in a cave─he and two of his daughters.

31And the firstborn said unto the little, “Our father is old. And a man is not in the land to come unto us according to the way of all the land. 32Go. We will make our father drink wine. And we have lain with him. And we have kept alive seed from our father.”

33And they made their father drink wine in that night. And the firstborn came. And she lay with her father. And he did not know when she lay and when she arose.

34And it was tomorrow. And the firstborn said unto the little, “Behold, I lay last night with my father. We will make him drink wine also tonight. And come. Lie with him. And we have kept alive seed from our father.” 35And they made their father drink wine also in that night. And the little arose. And she lay with him. And he did not know when she lay and when she arose.

36And the two daughters of Lot conceived from their father. 37And the firstborn bare a son. And she called his name From-Father. He is the father of Moab unto today. 38And the little [feminine], also he, bare a son. And she called his name Son-of-my-People. He is the father of the sons of Amon unto today.

Observations about Yehovah

Any reader of the Bible must come to understand certain character traits of the God of the Bible in order to understand what took place. I will next give a brief listing of these traits and of some other background details.

  • Yehovah has a very strong passion for a sojourner (pagan or otherwise).

Exodus 22:21 Thou shalt neither vex a sojourner nor oppress him. For ye were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

Exodus 23:9 Also thou shalt not oppress a sojourner. For ye know the heart of a sojourner, seeing ye were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

  • A sojourner has no army and no opportunity to be provided justice if that sojourner is mistreated in a foreign land.
  • Yehovah sees if a sojourner is protected or if the sojourner is mistreated by any people.
  • Any people that normally mistreats a sojourner is in Yehovah’s sites for annihilation.
  • When a sojourner comes into a foreign land, anyone who aids that sojourner (who cannot obtain justice if a wrong is done) is proving to be a friend of Yehovah in that matter.
  • When a city mistreats or ignores a sojourner (even if only one resident is doing that), Yehovah holds the entire city responsible.

Observations about Lot and His Family

  • Lot feared Yehovah.
  • He had two daughters at home, and he had at least two other daughters who were married in that city and participant in the culture.
  • When Lot gave shelter to those two sojourners, he knew that he would have to defend them with the lives of all his family members should violence arise. The home of a person is a state before Yehovah. It is a fort and a fortress.
  • When the violence came, Lot knew that he could not offer himself; that would guarantee the destruction of the sojourners, of his daughters and of his wife. He therefore did what any soldier must do: he attempted to minimize casualties.
  • He wasn’t offering his daughters to be killed, but to pacify their vile lusts in order to keep alive as many as possible.
  • He would be the last one to defend them, if the attack continued.
  • The same events will occur during the Tribulation (the period of seven years that will be the worst times the earth has ever seen). A form of the Jewish Holocaust will take place, but it will be much worse than the Holocaust commenced by Hitler. Non-Jewish families will offer and sometimes give their lives to save the lives of Jews. When any family member gives shelter to a Jewish person under such circumstances, all members of that family are in jeopardy of being killed.

The Bible’s Observations about Lot

2 Peter 2:4 For if God didn’t spare the angels that sinned, but cast them down to Hades and delivered them into chains of darkness to be reserved unto judgment, 5and He didn’t spare the old world, but saved Noah (the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness) bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly, 6and, turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly, 7and delivered righteous Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked… 8For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds.

This text affirms that Lot was a righteous man. No text challenges his righteousness. Even his daughters gave no protest to his offer to the vile attackers. Instead, they determined to keep seed alive to their father.

Plugging One’s Own Culture into the Bible; Jephthah

A common and normal practice for readers of the Bible is to view the events in the Bible in light of their own cultures. This has led to many traditions and icons that reflect those cultures while claiming to portray events and persons in the Bible. While this practice is accepted, it is no way to handle Biblical considerations.

Fathers in most or perhaps all of the kinder and moral cultures of the United States would never consider offering their daughters to be raped and sexually molested by violent and sexually eager men. U.S. Readers thus look at Lot with incredulity: how could a man even think of doing this? Wouldn’t a father instead offer himself in order to save his daughters? In a like manner, they read the events of Jephthah, and dismiss the notion that he followed through:

Judges 11:30 And Jephthah vowed a vow to Yehovah. And he said, “If, giving, Thou wilt give the sons of Ammon into my hand, 31and the exiter that will exit from my door of my house to meet me in my return in peace from the sons of Ammon will be—and he will be to Yehovah. And I will ascend him an ascension.”

32And Jephthah crossed-over unto the children of Amon to war via them. And Yehovah gave them into his hand. 33And he smote them from Aroer and unto thy coming Minnit, twenty city [cities] and unto the Mourning of Vineyards, a very big smiting. And the children of Ammon subjected from the faces of the children of Israel.

34And Jephthah came Mitzpah-ward unto his house. And behold, his daughter exited to meet him via tambourines and via whirlings! And only she is alone [an only child]. There is not to him, from him, a son or a daughter. 35And he was as his seeing her. And he tore his garments. And he said, “Ahah, my daughter! Bending, thou bent me! And thou, thou was via my disturbances! And I, I parted my mouth unto Yehovah. And I will not be able to return! 36And she said unto him, “My papa, thou parted thy mouth unto Yehovah. Do to me just-as he exited after from thy mouth; that [because] Yehovah did to thee vengeances from thy enemies, from the sons of Ammon!”

37And she said unto her papa, “He will do to me this speech. Refrain from me two months. And I have walked. And I will descend upon the mountains. And I will weep concerning my ripenesses, I and my neighbours.” 38And he said, “Walk.” And he sent her two months.

And she walked, she and her neighbours. And she wept concerning her ripenesses upon the mountains.

39And he was from the edge of two months. And she returned unto her papa. And he did his vow that he vowed to her. And she, she didn’t know a man. And she was a statute in Israel. 40From days days-ward, daughters of Israel will walk to rehearse to the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadi four days in a year.

Readers of this text usually don’t consider that she was the one casualty of the war with Ammon. Her father understood this, and she understood this.

Compromising to Avoid Responsibilities

When lives are at stake and when war is very personal, valiant ones do what they must in order to refuse to compromise in their responsibilities. The fear of Yehovah will produce this type of reaction. Members of cultures in the United States usually cannot deal with a fear of Yehovah that is that great. Most would compromise on anything and everything in order to avoid responsibilities that require considering others before members of their own immediate families. They will never be able to tolerate the following:

Luke 17:33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of man shall be ashamed of him when He shall come in His own glory and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.

This text refers to the following event:

Matthew 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels are with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory. 32And all races shall be gathered before Him. And He shall separate them one from another as a shepherd divides sheep from goats. 33And He shall set the sheep on His right hand, and the goats on the left. 34Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand, “Come, ye blessed of my Father! Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world! 35For I was hungry, and ye gave me food! I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink! I was a stranger, and ye took me in; 36naked, and ye clothed me. I was sick, and ye visited me. I was in prison, and ye came unto me!” 37Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, “Lord, when did we see thee hungry, and fed, or thirsty, and gave drink? 38When did we see thee a stranger, and took in, or naked, and clothed? 39Or when did we see thee sick or in prison, and came unto thee?” 40And the King shall answer and say unto them, “Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me!”

41Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels! 42For I was hungry, and ye gave me no food. I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink. 43I was a stranger, and ye didn’t take me in; naked, and ye didn’t cloth me; sick and in prison, and ye didn’t visit me.” 44Then shall they also answer him, saying, “Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and didn’t minister unto thee?” 45Then shall He answer them saying, “Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye didn’t do it to one of the least of these, ye didn’t do it to me!” 46And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, and the righteous into everlasting life.

This text guarantees the damnation of folks who didn’t do certain very risky things, and the salvation of folks who did! All the persons of the races being judged in this text are non-Jewish, and they don’t have a faith that is in the God of the Bible. What they do during the Tribulation will determine whether they will live and be granted Salvation (at a later time) or whether they will be sent into everlasting punishment. If they did right, they did the riskiest actions, like visiting Jewish sick prisoners (held by enemies of Israel). Doing that activity will be akin to what Lot did when he took sojourners into his house.

Conclusion

Modern Christianity has no room for these ethics and for this type of morality. Strangely, the non-Biblical religion of Islam does. This has been a curiosity of history: participants in faiths that are opposed to the Bible often demonstrate parts of the Biblical ethic to a far greater degree than participants of faiths that are foreign to the Bible. Thus, a fervent Islamic household knows that protecting a sojourner with the lives of all family members is just what must be done.

Those who fear Yehovah the God of the Bible and who are put in these same terrible predicaments will also do the same.

Exodus 15 Song of Moshe and Israelis QA

Song of Moshe and Israelis

Questions and Proposed Answers

Background and Printed Text: Exodus chapter 15

Exodus 15:1 Then Draw (Moshe) will sing this song, and the children of Israel, to Yehovah. And they will say, to say, “I will sing to Yehovah! For heightening, He heightened horse! And He elevated his chariot via the Sea—2my Strength and the ballad of Yah! And He became to Salvation to me! This is my Mighty-[One]! And I house-dwelt Him—my Gods, my Father! And I elevated Him!

3 “Yehovah is a man of war! Yehovah is His Name! 4He taught charioteers of Pharaoh and his army via the Sea! And they immersed the choice of his thirds via the Ending Sea! 5Depths shall blanket-cover them. They shall descend into the profoundnesses like a stone.

6Thy right, Yehovah, is my majesty via power! Thy right, Yehovah, will shatter an enemy! 7Thou wilt demolish Thy risers via the multiplicity of Thy highness! Thou wilt send Thy heat! He will eat them as chaff!

8And Waters were piled via the wind of Thy noses. Distillings were positioned like a heap. Depths congealed in the heart of the Sea! 9Enemy said, ‘I will chase! I will reach! I will divide plunder! My being shall be filled of them! I will empty my sword! My hand will inherit them!’ 10Thou didst blow via Thy wind. The Sea blanket-covered them. They submerged like lead in majestic waters!

11 “Who is like Thee via their mighty-[one], Yehovah? Who is like Thee—majestic via a Holy-[One], Terror of Psalms Pele did? 12Thou stretched Thy right; land swallowed them.

13 “Thou guided this people Thou redeemed via Thy Grace. Thou led via Thy strength unto the living-quarter of Thy Holy-[One].

14 “The peoples hearkened. They quaked. Whirling grasped the inhabitants of Palestine. 15Then the alufs of Edom were dismayed, the strongmen of Moab! Trembling shall grasp them! All the inhabitants of Canaan melted! 16Dread shall fall upon them, and fear via the bigness of Thine arm. They shall be silent as a stone until Thy people will cross-over, Yehovah—until this people Thou hast acquired will cross-over! 17Thou shalt bring them. And Thou hast planted them in the Mountain of Thine inheritance established for Thy dwelling! Thou acted, Yehovah. Thine hands established the Sanctuary of my Lords!

18Yehovah will reign to Hider and onward!

19 “For Pharaoh’s horse came with his chariot and with his horsemen into the Sea. And Yehovah returned the waters of the Sea upon them. And the children of Israel walked via the dry in the midst of the Sea.”

20And Miriam the prophetess, sister of Aharon took the tambourine via her hand. And all the women exited after her via tambourines and via dances. 21And Miriam answered to them, “Sing-ye to Yehovah! For heightening, He heightened horse! And He elevated his chariot in the Sea!”

22And Draw (Moshe) journeyed with Israel from Ending Sea. And they exited unto Ox Desert. And they walked three days via desert. And they didn’t find water. 23And they came Bitternessward. And they were not able to drink waters from bitterness. For they are bitter! Therefore he called her name Bitter. 24And the people, they lodged upon Draw (Moshe) to say, “What shall we drink?” 25And he screamed unto Yehovah. And Yehovah taught him a tree. And he slung unto the waters. And the waters sweetened. He put a statute and a justice to him there. And He proved him there. 26And He said, “If hearkening, thou wilt hearken to the voice of Yehovah thy Gods, and thou wilt do the straight in His eyes, and thou wilt ‘ear’ to His commandments, and thou wilt guard all His statutes, I will not put upon thee all the sicknesses that I put into Egypt. For I am Yehovah thy Healer!

27And they came Their-Ramward. And twelve eyes of water and seventy palms are there. And they camped there upon the waters.

I. High Horse (verses 1-2)

Moshe will sing a song that is prophecy. He will teach the song to the children of Israel so that they will know what will happen during the End Times, during the Tribulation, and so that they will sing it to Yehovah!

They will start by saying, “I will sing to Yehovah!”

Why will they sing to Him? Yehovah heightened horse! He, the speaker’s Strength and the very ballad of Yah, also elevated the chariot by means of the Sea. This being who is the Strength of the speaker and who is the ballad of Yah became to the very Salvation of the speaker! He is identified as the speaker’s Mighty One. Yet, the speaker house-dwelt Him; He house-dwelt his Gods and his Father! The speaker also elevated Him!

Questions

1. The text states, “Then Moshe will sing this song, and the children of Israel, to Yehovah.” That sounds like it is a future text. Why is the text worded this way? It is a future text! I do not doubt that Moshe sang this after the Exodus, but the text is telling careful readers that this is what will occur in the future. The Israelis didn’t sing along with Moshe in the original event, but they will when those things described in this text occur in the future.

2. Why will they sing this song to Yehovah? This song is prophetic, and will be historical at that time. They will see that all these things happened exactly as described. They will be rejoicing as they sing the very things that Yehovah did—things that Yehovah wrote so many centuries before they occurred!

3. Why does the text say, “And they will say, to say”? If the text had only said, “And they will say,” it would have indicated that the Israelis will just repeat the words of the song. By wording it, “And they will say, to say,” this indicates that this will be what the Israelis truly desire to communicate! It will be from them, and not just repeated words.

4. Why will they say, “I will sing to Yehovah,” instead of singing, “I will sing to Yehovah”? Again, they will be communicating their own hearts, and not just repeating what has already been said. Besides, they are declaring what they will say in the future: “I will sing to Yehovah.” This isn’t a one-time communication; it will be what the Israelis do throughout the Millennium.

5. What does “He heightened horse” mean? What occurred? The word translated heightened is used for arrogance (that is, thinking one is bigger and higher than he/she really is) when it isn’t used for Yehovah. When it is used for Yehovah, it shows His highness in terms of all things, including rank. I propose that this text indicates that Yehovah is responsible for causing humans to view horses very highly in the future. Horses have become far less important than they were only 150 years ago. Automobiles, trucks, trains and other forms of transport have replaced horses and other pack and riding animals. Yet, in the End Times, the horse will again be a very important animal among all the animals of the world. I propose that this text explains that Yehovah is the one who has raised up horses in great rank among humans.

6. If the above answer is true, why did Yehovah heighten the horse? Yehovah will use horses in His plan! Bad guys riding horses will be overthrown along with their horses, and good guys riding horses will come to Mount Zion during the Millennium, thus not polluting the Mountain and the lands on the way to the Mountain.

7. Explain the wording, “For heightening, He heightened horse”: The repetition of the verb (to heighten in this case) shows that it is being strongly stated and strongly done. Yehovah really heightened horses in man’s estimation of their value.

8. What did Yehovah do if He elevated his chariot via the Sea? His can refer to either Pharaoh or the horse! Yehovah still elevated the chariot using the Sea! Thus, Yehovah caused the chariot to go up by means of the Sea. While its riders went down, the chariot seems to have floated. This must be very important for the Israelis because it is mentioned as important in the text. Seeing the empty chariot floating will prove that the chariot’s rider is gone! (Not seeing the chariot at all might give the impression that the chariot’s riders and the chariot escaped from the Sea.)

9. Who is the speaker in this Psalm text, and why do I call this a Psalm? There are other Psalms besides the ones listed in the Book of Psalms. This text is exactly like so many of the Psalms listed in the Book of the Psalms, and the way to view it is just like one must view the Psalms elsewhere. Every text must be taken literally and be carefully considered. Each statement tells a very important part of the events, and some statements give far more information than one might expect from them. A psalm is a commendation—that is, telling that something has been done very well. This Psalm shows this very well. (Some Psalms are very sad, but they still show that Yehovah has done things very well.)

Now, the speaker in any prophecy usually isn’t the writer. The writer is Moshe, in this case, but Moshe isn’t the speaker. The text states that Moshe and the children of Israel will sing this song to Yehovah; yet, the pronouns include I, me and my instead of we, us and our. When I run into texts like this, I think along these lines: “Could this be Israel as a group? That would explain the singular pronoun.” I then think, “Could this be Jerusalem, since Jerusalem also speaks in the Bible?” Finally, I think, “Could this be Mount Zion, since Yehovah and Mount Zion converse in the Bible?” I then see if I can determine if the speaker is one of these three by reading more of the text. In this case, I came to verse 13: “Thou guided this people Thou redeemed via Thy Grace.” I know that this people refers to the People of Israel; thus, the speaker isn’t the People of Israel.

Verse 17 states, “Thou shalt bring them.” Thus, the speaker is already where Yehovah will bring them; otherwise, the speaker would have said, “Thou shalt send them.” If I am right on this, the next line gives me an important clue: “And Thou hast planted them in the Mountain of Thine inheritance established for Thy dwelling!” At this point, I conclude that Mount Zion herself is the speaker. She is such an important character in the Bible, and she greatly loves the Israelis. She is a small and unimportant hill right now (in 2011), but she will become the most important piece of land in the world, and she will become very large during the Tribulation!

10. Why does the speaker refer to Yehovah as my Strength? If the speaker is Mount Zion, as I propose, a mountain can’t do much of anything unless another provides strength to it. Humans were made to serve the soil (among other things), and if they diligently work, they can greatly improve the strength of the soil so that it can produce much more. Yehovah will do far more than this for Mount Zion; Enemies will sink her, and He will raise her from the dead! Yehovah will raise her! He will give her the ability to rally the Israelis and their friends to come to her in order to live!

Isaiah 52:1 “Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion!”

The One Who is the strength of the speaker is Yehovah, but in the form of the Messiah: in the form of Yeshua!

11. What is a ballad? It is a story in the form of a song.

12. Who is Yah? Yah is an abbreviation (shortened form) of Yehovah, which is a shortened form for Yeheyeh, Hoveh, Hayah, meaning He will be, He is, He was. Thus, Yah is Yehovah.

13. Why would the speaker call Yehovah “the ballad of Yah”? This being who is the ballad of Yah is Yeshua! He is the very story in song about Yehovah! Therefore, the name fits.

14. The next statement declares that “He became to Salvation…” How did this occur? What is this describing? The Name Yeshua means Salvation. Yeshua’s work is about saving lives both physically and everlastingly. Yehovah sent His speech to be Salvation—that is, He sent part of Himself to be the Salvation for humans (and in this case, for the mountain). That occurred first when Yeshua appeared in ‘Old Testament’ events and saved lives, but it especially occurred when Yeshua was born as a mortal Israeli child. It will occur in the future when Yeshua is Salvation to Israel and Israel’s friends during the Tribulation, and also to Mount Zion. Thus, the One known as “my Strength” and as “the ballad of Yah” has also become Salvation in person.

15. Explain “He became to Salvation to me:” The expression, to me, sounds odd in English. For me sounds more natural. Yet, the expression in Hebrew, to me, is deeper and covers more that just for me. While for me means on my behalf, to me means that and also is very personal (as if the speaker is saying, He became Salvation for me personally—as my property). To me shows ownership.

16. If the speaker is Mount Zion, will Mount Zion need saving? Yes! Mount Zion will be attacked and sunk. She will then be resurrected from the earth and from among the dead. Thus, she will need saving.

17. What is a mighty one in the Bible? It is one who has the ability to get done what must be done, and that ability requires strength and fortitude. It is often associated with war, but not always. From the viewpoint of a child, a mighty one is a person who deals with that child, and does what is necessary for the good care and benefit of that young child. Adults of this nature seem to be able to do anything in the eyes of a very young child.

This can refer to Yehovah as it does in this text. The fuller phrase used in the Bible is the Mighty One of Israel or the Mighty One of Jacob.

18. Why is the speaker claiming this Mighty One as his/her own? This is a declaration of ownership as a mighty one—as a hero! The speaker feels very attached to Yehovah as her hero. It is as if the mountain is a child: “That’s my daddy!” for example.

19. What does house-dwelt mean? The main flavour of this word is habitation, which is similar to abode: a place where a person or animal lives permanently or for a while. A habitation is a place that a person or animal inhabits, occupies. This word (Navah in Hebrew) connects more with home than with abode (an abode doesn’t have to be a home). Thus, I chose house-dwelt.

20. How can the speaker ‘house-dwell’ someone else? If the speaker is Mount Zion, and if Him is Yeshua, if Mount Zion provides Yeshua with a place for Him to abide for a while, and if Yeshua does make Mount Zion His temporary residence, Mount Zion has house-dwelt Yeshua! Now, there is another detail that we must consider. If any of Yeshua’s property (in the form of Israelis) is also given a place to stay on Mount Zion, whatever is done to one of Yeshua’s persons is done to Yeshua! Thus, by taking in guests who belong to Yeshua, the mountain has taken Yeshua in as a guest! This is also true of anyone who will have taken Israelis in as guests!

Every person made in the image of God is very valuable because of that image. Yehovah judges everyone by the works that he/she does in this life. Value before God is determined by two means: the image of God on the person, and what the person does.

21. The statement, “And I house-dwelt Him—my Gods, my Father!” sounds as if it is spoken in excitement. If this is true, why is the speaker so excited? Mount Zion either just now realized that she had been providing an abode for her Gods and her Father, Yehovah by providing abodes for the Israelis, or she is expressing the privilege she feels at being able to do this.

22. If the speaker is Mount Zion, how can Mount Zion call Yeshua “my Father”? All things were created by Yeshua:

Colossians 1:13 And He translated [us] into the kingdom of the Son of His love 14in Whom we have redemption through His blood—the remission of sins, 15Who is the image of God—the invisible firstborn of all creation. 16For, all things were created by Him: the things in the heavens and the things upon the land, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or lordships or principalities or authorities—all things have been created by Him and for Him.

Since He created all things, including Mount Zion, He is the Father of even Mount Zion.

23. What did the speaker do to elevate Him? This reminds me of the following text:

John 12:32 “And I—if I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all unto me.” 33He said this signifying what death He would die.

If this is correct, it is as if the speaker (Mount Zion) feels part of the guilt for participating in this. Yet, consider this from another angle. Mount Zion will gladly take in Israelis who are innocent. Those Israelis well be conducted up Mount Zion; thus, Mount Zion will elevate them. Thus, Mount Zion will be elevating Yeshua by elevating His property as Mount Zion conducts them up her sides.

II. The Baptism of Pharaoh (verses 3-5)

Yehovah is a man of war. His Name is Yehovah! Yehovah gave Pharaoh’s charioteers and Pharaoh’s army a lesson in warfare that they will never forget by means of the Ending Sea.

Pharaoh’s charioteers and soldiers immersed the best of Pharaoh’s fighting thirds by means of the Ending Sea!

In the future, depths call cover them like a blanket; they will descend into the greatest depths of oceans like a stone.

Questions

1. Is the God of the Bible against war? He obviously isn’t if He is a man of war!

2. Is the God of the Bible for war? He will be for war until He comes to reign. Once He arrives, He will cause all wars to cease.

3. Why is He for war? When humans become prosperous, they increase their sinning; that sinning involves hurting, torturing and killing innocent folks for pleasure. Yehovah can do several things to stop those humans, including the following:

  • He can slaughter them (by various means including disease outbreaks)
  • He can bring war, and make sure they are defeated by another culture that is less violent outside of war and more violent in war
  • He can make them slaves—but this usually involves war
  • He can starve them until they are spending all their time just trying to find food

The least traumatic of all of these is war since most are killed quickly, and most feel that they have an opportunity to fight and perhaps win. Also, with war, there is sometimes more time to turn to do right. When those fighting in wars can take slaves, sometimes the best of societies are brought home to serve, and thus to become parts of new families. Relationships can be built that are very good and very strong if both the slaves and the slavemasters are wise. Yehovah has instituted war because it solves a number of problems at the same time in some cases. In other cases, it is a powerful tool for vengeance. (Yehovah used war to ravage Russia because of its mistreatment of the Jews for so long; He also made sure that Communism did to all the societies and cultures what those societies and cultures had done to the Jews for centuries.)

4. Why does the text state, “Yehovah is His Name”? I can think of a number of reasons:

  • When Yehovah is showing His character and works during the Tribulation, many throughout the world will desire to know the name of this deity who is doing these things. Thus, He tells them His name in this text.
  • When Moshe and the Israelis will sing about these works, they will identify this one and only deity who continues after the Tribulation and into the Millennium so that others who are not very familiar with Him will know His name.
  • The Name Yehovah has a meaning: He will be, He is, He was. Thus, when Moshe and the Israelis sing this song, they will tell all that His name is He will be, He is, He was so that they will know that this same God will continue into the future, that He is present now, and that He is the God Who was. This is different from all other gods.
  • This identifies the God with the name Yehovah as a man of war so that all will know that Yehovah fights!

5. What did Yehovah teach charioteers of Pharaoh and His army, using the sea? He taught them the following:

  • Yehovah is sovereign over the sea, over the waters, and over the land.
  • The Egyptians cannot win if Yehovah is fighting on the side of Israel.
  • Yehovah is the greatest warrior the earth has ever seen and will ever see.
  • The chariots of Egypt are meaningless in a fight with Yehovah.
  • The army of Egypt is anything but great in a fight with Yehovah.
  • A rowdy band of Israeli slaves can easily defeat the greatest army of Egypt if Yehovah is with the Israelis in the battle.
  • The sea itself will defeat the great Egyptian army in seconds if Yehovah turns the sea against Egypt.

6. Who, again, are Pharaoh’s thirds? I previously proposed that they were soldiers who were excellent swordsmen and who rode on the chariots along with the chariot drivers so that they could slaughter soldiers while the chariot riders conducted the chariots through the battle lines. I don’t have proof for this, but the wording gave me that impression.

7. If the above is correct, what is “And they immersed the choice of his thirds via the Ending Sea” describing? Who are they? They are the charioteers! They immersed (took them down under water) the choice (the very best and most skilled) of Pharaoh’s thirds (I propose them to be the second men in the chariots besides the charioteer, and that they are considered the thirds because the chariot itself is counted). Thus, the charioteers drove the thirds into the middle of the Ending Sea, and immersed them in the water where they all drowned!

8. The next statement is, “Depths shall blanket-cover them.” What are these depths, and what will occur if they are blanket-covered? The Hebrew word translated depths indicates very deep parts of the oceans. It cannot and does not refer to the Ending Sea. The difference between the depths and a regular sea part of the Ending Sea is that the Ending Sea’s depth is measured in feet (like 30 feet, for example) while the depths are measured in miles.

If soldiers are blanket-covered in the depths, that shows that they will go down to the bottom, and the ocean-bottom dust will give them a light covering like a blanket. This is what divers find when they go down to look at shipwrecks. They must be careful, because if they stir up too much of that dust that has landed in the waters, they won’t be able to see, and they can get hurt or killed running into things.

9. How does “Depths shall blanket-cover them” differ from what happened to the Egyptian soldiers after they were killed by the Ending Sea returning upon them? The Egyptian soldiers who were killed in the days of Moshe all floated to the seashore so that the Israelis could see them! Our present text describes a future event in which the soldiers will be taken far, far down in the oceans, and their bodies will stay on the bottom where they will be covered like a blanket with the dust of the oceans.

10. What are profoundnesses? They are extremely deep areas of the oceans—for example, areas measured in depths of miles—like four to 6 ¾ miles! (According to geology.com, “Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench is the deepest point in Earth’s oceans. The bottom there is 10,924 meters (35,840 feet) below sea level.” Since a mile is 5,280 feet, that means that this point is 6.8 miles deep! Another web site, Wikipedia, says that the deepest point is the Vityaz-1 Deep, and it is 6.85 miles deep.)

11. What does “They shall descend into the profoundnesses like a stone” describe? This describes how their dead bodies will go down to very deep parts of the oceans as if their bodies were stones—they will sink very rapidly! (Human bodies do not sink like stones under normal circumstances; sometimes they don’t sink for quite a while, instead floating.) Thus, Yehovah will change their dead bodies so that they become hard and dense like rocks!

12. Why does Yehovah mix historical texts with future texts, or write future texts as if they are referring to historical events? Yehovah isn’t limited by time. Thus, Yehovah sees an event that happened three thousand years ago and a related event that will happen 15,000 years from now as if they are directly connected, because they are! That is the way He describes them for readers so that they, too, can make the connections!

III. Yehovah and His Right Do Battle (verses 6-7)

Yehovah’s right (that is, His right side) is the speaker’s majesty in power. Yehovah’s right will shatter an enemy! Yehovah will demolish all who rise up against Him to try to destroy Him; that demolition will be by means of the multiplicity of Yehovah’s highness!

Yehovah will send His heat (His fury). That fury will eat those risers as if they were chaff!

Questions

1. What is Yehovah’s right? This is often used in the Bible. This word is not the word used in right versus wrong, and it is not the word used to mean what a person should always be permitted to do (as in, “Those are my rights! I can do them!”). Instead, it refers to a direction: right versus left.

Now, if something is on Yehovah’s right side, Yehovah favours it! Yet, what is on Yehovah’s right side is a person—I am referring to Messiah Yeshua. He sits on Yehovah’s right side, and He stands on Yehovah’s right side—at His right hand. While being on Yehovah’s left isn’t bad, being on His right is a more privileged position.

In texts like this text, the word right is used as a title for the person, Yeshua! Thus, when it says, “Thy right, Yehovah, is my majesty in power,” it is akin to saying, “Thy right-hand-Man, Yehovah, is my majesty in power.” Yet, it also refers to Yehovah’s right hand; Yeshua is Yehovah’s right hand!

2. What does majesty mean? This word describes something or someone as honorable, noble, important, great, having authority, magnificent, large (in importance) and even royalty! Thus, I chose the word majesty for it.

3. What does “Thy right is my majesty via power” mean? The speaker, which I have proposed to be Mount Zion, is telling Yehovah that Yehovah’s right, referring to Yeshua, is the Mountain’s majesty by means of the power that Yehovah’s right is using. Thus, Mount Zion will become a very majestic, royal and important mountain because of Yeshua and the power that He will use to both save lives and to raise and make Mount Zion have the highest rank among the mountains of the world!

4. What does shattering an enemy involve? It involves causing a unified enemy that is well-coordinated to break apart and to flee as separate soldiers. It involves blowing an enemy to pieces (as in an explosion). It involves destroying the leadership and all the reasons for being unified in the first place.

5. What does demolishing folks involve? The Hebrew word behind the word demolish means the following, according to the writer of the best Hebrew lexicon that I can find: to tear down, break down, overthrow, beat down, break, break through, destroy, pluck down, pull down, throw down, ruined, destroyer, utterly; break away; to be torn down, be thrown down; to overthrow, tear down; destroyer (participle). I chose demolish. You can see that it involves much violence!

6. Who are these risers? They are folks whom Yehovah is elevating in rank and power! As you can tell, though they are elevated in rank and power, they are rising against the Israelis! Therefore, they are rising against Yehovah. Every person who achieves higher rank and status in this world achieves it because of Yehovah. Every person who achieves higher rank and status in this world is given higher rank and status in order to do good. Yet, most will use them to do bad. Thus, Yehovah will do one of the following:

  • He will remove their rank and status (either temporarily or permanently)
  • He will humble them so that they can become ‘good guys’
  • He will destroy them (including killing them)
  • He will wait for them to die a natural death or through disease
  • He will wait for them to be violently killed at the hands of others (good or bad)

I cannot think of any other type of actions that are not included. (Perhaps you can think of some.) In the case of this text, He will slaughter them.

7. By what means will Yehovah demolish these risers? He will do this by means of the multiplicity of His own highness! Since Yehovah truly is the greatest, He will use any means He desires, making certain that all involved know that He did it! He won’t permit their demolition to be in secret or private. He will show that He is the Greatest.

8. What does highness mean in this text? The Hebrew word gäōn has the following acceptations (accepted meanings in the dictionary): exaltation, majesty, pride; majesty, exaltation, excellence; of nations; of God; of the Jordan; pride, arrogance (bad sense). When it describes Yehovah, exaltation and highness fit well. Yehovah does not have arrogance or pride. Yet, this word indicates arrogance and pride when used of evildoers. Yehovah has no need to arrogate anything to Himself (that is, to consider something or some trait his own without having the right to do this); all things are His. Yet, enemies will witness the appearance of arrogance and pride as Yehovah demonstrates that He is the Greatest by publicly destroying them in terrible ways! The following Psalm verses literally rendered explain this (see Psalm 18:26 in the King James Bible):

Psalm 18:26 With a graced-[one] Thou wilt-grace-Thyself. With a valiant-[one] of perfection Thou wilt-perfect-Thyself. 27With a purified-[one] Thou wilt purify-Thyself. And with a pervert Thou wilt-twist-Thyself! 28For Thou art with a humble-[one]. Thou wilt save. And Thou wilt-abase elevated eyes!

9. What is this heat that Yehovah will send? This heat is truly hot! It is His wrath! It is from the fire that will be in the Lake of Fire and Burning Sulfur!

10. Who will eat them as chaff, and what does this mean? Yehovah’s heat will ‘eat’ them (like fire eats chaff, sawdust, paper, etc.)—will burn them up! They will be burned to death just like chaff (the very flammable hulls of grains) is burned in a fire!

IV. The Waters Participate (verses 8-10)

The Ending Sea’s waters were piled by means of the wind of Yehovah’s noses! Distillings of waters were set in place as if they were something that can be piled. The depths of the Sea congealed (like Jell-o) in the very hart of the Sea!

The enemy of Yehovah and Israel said, “I will chase! I will reach! I will divide plunder! My being shall be filled of them! I will empty my sword! My hand will inherit them!”

Yehovah responded by blowing His own wind. The Sea covered them like a blanket. They submerged like lead in majestic waters!

Questions

1. What does “Waters were piled via the wind of Thy noses” describe? Yehovah’s noses (what we would call His nostrils) express Yehovah’s anger. When He is angry, His nostrils flare, like the nostrils of an angry bull. Heat comes out of His nostrils, along with breath, as if He is blowing out air. His nostrils were the source of the wind that caused the waters in the Ending Sea to pile up!

2. What are these distillings? This Hebrew word for this describes the slower and smaller forms of liquids flowing. Those were the flowings of water that were left after the main waters of the Ending Sea were moved. If those distillings had not been also moved, the Israelis would have stepped into mud that would have stopped them from walking.

Yehovah positioned those distillings like a heap—like a pile of stones! Yet, they were still liquid—not like ice!

3. What does “Depths congealed in the heart of the Sea” describe? It describes tall masses of water in a form like Jell-o, and positioned in the very middle of the sea!

4. Look carefully at this wording: “Enemy said, ‘I will chase! I will reach! I will divide plunder! My being shall be filled of them! I will empty my sword! My hand will inherit them!’” Did this happen in Moshe’s day? The Egyptians did chase the Israelis. The Egyptians thought they could reach the Israelis. They didn’t come after plunder, however; they came to retrieve the Israelis for Pharaoh so that Egypt wouldn’t lose them as slaves. Now, “My being shall be filled of [with] them” isn’t what the soldiers or Pharaoh desired; they didn’t come to devour them. They came to return them to Egyptian slavery. Then, “I will empty my sword” describes their preparing to attack and slaughter; that was the last thing that Pharaoh and the Egyptians desired to do. They desired them back and unhurt. The statement, “My hand will inherit them” isn’t what the Egyptians would have said, since they already thought that they owned the Israeli slaves.

5. Again, why does Yehovah mix texts about the crossing of the Ending Sea with texts that are about events that never took place? Yehovah desires careful readers to associate the historical events with the events that will occur: events that will have many similarities with what took place in the past, but will be much bigger!

6. What does “Thou didst blow via Thy wind; the Sea blanket-covered them” describe? This describes Yehovah’s blowing and causing the jelled waters to return to their normal state: wet, flowing waters! The sea returned and covered the soldiers like a blanket so that the soldiers were gone and out of sight.

7. If the sea blanket-covered them, how could they be seen dead along the shore?? Again, this describes a future event and not a past event. This describes the silt and sand at the bottom of the sea lightly covering the corpses that sank to the bottom; that isn’t what happened in Moshe’s day. The corpses were all washed ashore so that the Israelis could see them and so that they would know that the Egyptian army was entirely gone!

8. If this doesn’t describe a past event, when will this occur? It will occur during the Tribulation many centuries from now. Thus, Yehovah will do a similar but greater miracle at that time, and He won’t need to cause the corpses to be exposed. No one will want to view them, since those they were chasing will keep going to Mount Zion.

9. What does “They submerged like lead in majestic waters” mean? This means that their bodies didn’t float; instead, they sank as if they were made of lead—a very heavy metal that sinks as fast as or faster than stones! Those corpses sank that fast because Yehovah made them sink that fast; human bodies just don’t sink like that!

V. Comparing Other Gods (verses 11-12)

The speaker asked Yehovah a question: “Who is like Thee by means of their mighty one, Yehovah?” He continued, “Who is like Thee—majestic via a Holy One, Terror of Psalms Pele Did?” The speaker explained, “Thou stretched Thy right; land swallowed them!”

Questions

1. The first part of the question is, “Who is like Thee, Yehovah?” Answer this question. The only One Who is like Yehovah is Yehovah (in the form of Yeshua). There is no other being like Yehovah.

2. The question continues, “Who is like Thee via their mighty-[one], Yehovah?” What does “via their mighty one” mean? First, the statement indicates that Yehovah, too, has a mighty one, and He does! That mighty one is the Mighty One of Israel: Yeshua! Thus, the question becomes something like this: Who is like Thee, Yehovah, by means of their having a mighty one like Yeshua? There is no other deity who is both like Yehovah and who also has a separate mighty one who has done great things before man and before the entire planet! Yehovah combined with Yeshua are unique! Humans claim that all the other gods are somewhat like Yehovah, but their claims don’t have backing by action.

Yet, in our present time, the Mighty One of Israel is hidden from view so that nearly all humans don’t believe in Him. Many believe in their own gods whom they call ‘Jesus,’ ‘Lord,’ ‘God,’ ‘Allah’ (which means ‘God’ in Arabic), etc., but their gods are not the same as the Mighty One of Israel in His attributes (in His characteristics, what He does, for whom He stands, His righteousness, His justice, and so on). These folks would not like the Mighty One of Israel! Thus, the speaker asks, “Who is like Thee via their mighty one, Yehovah?” The answer is, No one!

3. Why does the speaker ask again, “Who is like Thee?” The speaker is about to describe differences!

4. Explain “majestic via a Holy One”: Yehovah’s majesty, splendour, greatness, etc. shows up on earth by means of Yehovah’s Holy One Whom Yehovah sent! Thus, Yeshua is the One Who shows just how majestic Yehovah is! If Yeshua Himself is extremely majestic, noble, glorious, royal, great, etc., and Yeshua was sent from Yehovah, that shows that Yehovah must be equally extremely majestic, noble, glorious, royal, great, etc.!

5. Explain “Terror of Psalms”: Terror refers to a person: to Yeshua. He is the Terror found in the Psalms in the Bible! (Yet, He is also the Salvation found in the Psalms in the Bible!) Every psalm is a praise, since the world translated psalm means praise. A praise is a commendation for doing things well; it is the giving of credit and acknowledgement for doing doings well. Those commendations of Yehovah describe how Yeshua will be a terror to his enemies and the Salvation of His people, Israel, as well as the Salvation of those who have proven to be friends of Israel, those who fear Yehovah in Truth. There is no terrorist like Yeshua; He is a destroying terrorist to His enemies who will not turn, and He will save the lives of even the weakest and least able persons who look to Him for His coming to reign (looking for Him during the Tribulation).

Read the Psalms! You will see descriptions of this Terrorist of Psalms. For example,

Psalm 2:4 Sitter in the heavens shall laugh! My Lords shall deride at them! 5Then He shall speak unto them via His nose! And He will terrify them via His heat!

6. Who is Pele? Pele means miracle, but not in the ordinary form of the Hebrew word miracle. It refers to a person who is the Messiah, the Miracle-doer of Israel, besides being the Miracle of Israel! Thus, Pele is another name for Yeshua. In one text, Pele is translated as Wonderful, describing that His Name will be called Wonderful.

7. What did Pele do, according to this text? He is the One who will do the Terror in the Psalms!

8. Who is thou in, “Thou stretched Thy right”? He is Yehovah!

9. What ‘right’ did He stretch? This refers to His hand and/or His arm! When He stretches His hand, He is sending His wrath! The following texts show this:

Isaiah 5:25 Therefore, Yehovah’s nose smoked into His people. And His hand is stretched-over him! And He smote him! And the mountains quaked {with terror}. And their corpse was as manure in the midst of streets. In all this, His nose did not return. And His hand is still stretched-out!

Isaiah 9:17 Therefore my Lords shall not rejoice over his chosen-ones! And He will not womb his orphans and his widows! For all of him is profane and a bad-doer, and every mouth speaks folly. His nose did not return in all. And His hand is stretched out!

10. Whom did land swallow? Land swallowed the bad guys—the enemies and those who rose up against Yehovah and the People of Israel.

VI. Guiding and Leading the Israelis (verse 13)

The speaker continued, “Thou guided this people Thou redeemed via Thy Grace.” He didn’t only work via His Grace, however; “Thou led via Thy strength unto the living-quarters of Thy Holy One!”

Questions

1. To what destination did Yehovah guide this people? Yehovah guided this people to Mount Zion. Yet, since this is a future event, I should say that Yehovah will guide this people to Mount Zion. The guiding that Yehovah did for the Israelis as they came out of Egypt was a very small example of what He will do in the future.

2. What does redeem mean? The word used here means to pay the price to free someone or something from being held or being a prisoner. It can also include purchasing someone or something.

3. If the above is true, from whom were the people freed, or from whom will the people be freed? Look carefully at the following texts:

Hebrews 9:12 Not by the blood of goats and calves, but rather by His own blood He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained everlasting redemption.

This text shows that the price He paid was His own blood. That doesn’t tell from whom they were redeemed, however.

Hebrews 13:12 Yeshua also suffered outside the gate so-that He will sanctify the people with His own blood.

Since sanctifying is obtaining ownership, this shows that Yeshua will own this people. This still doesn’t explain from whom He did the purchasing.

The answer to this question was hard for me to find, at first. I then realized that the payment was made to justice, since the People of Israel was made of sinners, and all sinners are under the penalty of death. Justice had to be paid, as if justice were a person, but justice isn’t a person. Justice must be satisfied, since Yehovah is the God of justice. Since the Israelis were under the sentence of death, the only way to free them from that sentence will be to satisfy justice.

The people to which this refers is the people of Israel. This is a future text; the people of Israel will be redeemed, and this redemption will be by means of Yehovah’s Grace. His fervent zeal for the people of Israel will motivate Him to take action on their behalf.

4. What is the definition of Grace as it is used throughout the Bible? Grace is a very strong, burning zeal (conviction and drive to do something) by which one is motivated to take action regarding anything. That action can be on behalf of someone or something, or it can be against someone or something. It is like a mother who is both protecting her baby from an attacker (grace toward her baby) and is attacking the attacker at the same time (grace against the attacker).

5. To where were this people guided? They will be guided to several places at first: one part to Mount Zion, and another to the Botzrah/Petra area of the present country of Jordan, two safe havens during the Tribulation. Those in the Petra/Botzrah area will later come to Mount Zion where all remaining Israel will be gathered.

6. How can Yehovah lead via strength? What does this mean? Yehovah’s strength is another reference to the Messiah Himself. This ‘strength of Yehovah’ will be the ‘strength of Israel.’

7. What is this living-quarter? It is Mount Zion, since that will be the place where Yehovah will dwell during the Millennium and during the last portion of the Tribulation.

8. Who is this Holy One? He is Yeshua. He is called the Holy One because He is holy—that is, He is owned. The full title is the Holy One of Israel since Israel owns Him!

VII. The Terrors of the Peoples and Planting of Israel (verses 14-17)

Finally, the peoples of the world hearkened. They then quaked, shaking with terror. An army grasped the inhabitants of Palestine! The alufs of Edom were dismayed, and so were the strongmen of Moab!

In the future, trembling will grasp them!

In the past, the inhabitants of Canaan melted.

In the future, dread will fall upon them—dread and fear by means of the bigness of Yehovah’s arm! They will be totally silent like a stone is silent until Yehovah’s people will cross over—until this people that Yehovah has acquired will cross over!

Yehovah will bring them. Then, Yehovah will have planted them in the Mountain of Yehovah’s inheritance that He established for His dwelling!

Yehovah acted! Yehovah’s own hands established the Sanctuary of the speaker’s Lords!

Questions

1. Identify the peoples who hearkened: They are the various peoples of the world; each people is a separate cultural group. (A cultural group is a group of individuals who live and function within the same culture—the same practices and languages of life. They understand each other and hold similar practices.)

2. To whom and to what did they hearken? To hearken is to both listen and respond (in obedience, if that is what is being commanded). They finally hearkened to Yehovah’s obvious, open and deadly actions against some of Israel’s enemies and for Israel being redeemed and led. The peoples of the world will finally realize that Yehovah, the Gods of Israel, is above all other gods.

3. If they hearkened, does that mean that they did what Yehovah commanded them to do? No! Their hearkening was only in part! They now knew that Yehovah was doing all these things, but they were not willing to do what Yehovah said (by turning to righteousness and from sin)!

4. Why did they quake? What happened? They realized that Yehovah is furious against them for their willingness to even tolerate Israel’s destruction by the hand of Israel’s enemies! They now know that Yehovah is targeting them (those who are not friends of Israel), and they don’t know what He will do next!

5. What does “Whirling grasped the inhabitants of Palestine” mean? This describes the motion of anyone either in pain or in total confusion who begins going in circles (or, running around in circles). This word is usually used in conjunction with (in connection with) a woman who is giving birth (in natural childbirth). She is very uncomfortable, and she moves as she pushes with a twisting motion (which helps the baby move through the birth canal). When men experience this, they are totally confused, running for their lives to try to protect themselves or keep themselves alive. Some wounded men twist in the same pattern because of the intense pain they are enduring.

Since this happened to the inhabitants of Palestine, or better, since this will happen in the future to the inhabitants of Palestine, they will find their hopes (of destroying Israel) totally ruined, and their hopes (of being free on their own lands) gone; they will do what they have always done: take a stand against Yehovah and Yehovah’s property (the Israelis).

6. What do the Palestinians have to do with the events of the Israelis leaving Egypt under Moshe? They have absolutely nothing to do with the historical events under Moshe. They have everything to do with the future events of the Israelis leaving Egypt during the Tribulation. At that time, the Palestinians will be hoping that Israel is finally captured and destroyed, and that the Palestinians will finally be able to have the entire land of Israel to themselves. (The Palestinians are exactly the same people as the ‘Philistines,’ and translators nearly always call this people in the Bible with the name Philistines as if they have nothing to do with the modern Palestinians!)

7. What is an aluf? This is a person over a thousand soldiers. Such a rank exists in the modern Israeli army; this rank is that of a Major General.

8. Why was Edom involved in these historical events? Edom wasn’t involved in the historical events! Edom will be involved in the future events! The Edomites have hated the Israelis from the beginning even though they are related to them. Esau and Jacob were brothers; they grew up together, and they played together, being twins. The people that was formed from Esau (the Edomites) became hateful toward the people that was formed from Jacob (the Israelis) at a very early stage in history, and that hatred has been passed on from one generation to another. It will continue into the End Times. At that time, the Edomites will both hope for and work for the entire elimination of the Israelis. When Yehovah fights on the side of the Israelis, this will dismay the Edomites, since their own gods just won’t work, and their own plans will also not work. These alufs of Edom will be terrified and confused as Yehovah ruins their efforts against the Israelis.

9. Who is Moab? Moab was another relative of the Israelis, although they were not as close as Esau. This is how they were related:

  • Lot was Avraham’s nephew.
  • Lot had two sons; one was named Moab.
  • Moab became a tribe, and finally a race: the race of the Moabites.
  • Avraham childed Isaac, who childed Jacob.
  • Jacob’s name was changed to Israel.
  • Israel became a tribe, and finally a race: the Israelis.

Thus, the Moabites (Moab) and the Israelis (Israel) are related. Yet, the people of Moab, like the people of Edom, have held a hatred for the Israelis. (The women of Moab will later prove to be friends to the Israelis.)

10. What are “the strongmen of Moab”? They are like the toughest members of gangs; the Moabite gangsters (strongmen) will fight hard to destroy the Israelis.

11. Why are these folks trying so hard to destroy Israel? Why do they hate Israel so much? These different peoples have felt that their lives would be so much better if the Israelis no longer existed. They also know that the Gods of Israel, Yehovah, is causing the great Tribulation that has ruined so much of the world. If they can only destroy the Israelis, that will bring an end to the Gods of Israel (since this has always worked in the past with any other people and its gods). So many wars will have taken place between these peoples and the Israelis, by now, and no one has been able to destroy the Israelis. They will blame the Israelis for there being no peace on earth and for the lack of their own prosperity. They will not know or understand that they are taking the side of demons by wanting to destroy Israel. All demons know that the only way to stop Yehovah from permanently putting them into the Lake of Fire and Sulfur is by destroying Israel, since only the Israelis in Jerusalem can call for the Messiah to come to reign; once Messiah arrives, He will arrest all demons and lock them up, eventually placing them in that fire and burning sulfur lake.

12. Why will trembling grasp them? They will see what Yehovah is doing on behalf of the Israelis, and they won’t know what Yehovah will do next. They will therefore begin to shake with fear as they see the strong hand of Yehovah on the side of the Israelis—that is, saving their lives while ruining the attempts of the Edomites and the Moabites.

13. Who are the inhabitants of Canaan? They consist of the Canaanites and a number of other races that dwell on the same land with the Canaanites. The Bible gives a listing of these groups, and they include the Amorites, the Hittites, the Jebusites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, and the Amalekites.

14. What happened to them if they melted? If they melted, they liquefied and went into the earth. Yehovah will do this literally, in some cases! They won’t be able to stand in other cases, and their strength and power will leave them. They will go into hiding as if they were melting snow. Where they were in groups violently shouting against the Israelis and the Gods of Israel, now they won’t be seen anywhere.

15. What is dread? It is a combination of fear and anxiety in which someone just knows that something terrible or difficult will happen to him, and that person greatly desires to avoid that, if possible. In this case, the dread will be so great, that it will be a terror.

16. What will they dread? They will dread what Yehovah will do to them because they have taken a stand against Yehovah and His property! They will dread the bigness of Yehovah’s arm!

17. What is Yehovah’s arm? A very young child sees the arm of an adult in very interesting ways. That arm can support the child; it can also take hold of the child and pull the child from what he/she was doing. That arm can swat the child’s hand; the child thinks that the arm can do anything. If that arm is connected to an angry adult, that arm can be very dangerous. The same is true of Yehovah’s arm. He can send His arm, since the arm of Yehovah is Yeshua! Yehovah’s arm is so big, that no place is safe from His arm; His reach is greater than any place that these peoples can go.

18. The text describes Yehovah’s people crossing over. Explain what they will be crossing, and also what this word has to do with the word Hebrew. The word Ever in Hebrew (pronounced Ev-Air) means he crossed over. It is the name of a man who was an ancestor of Avraham. All that were born to this man were called Evereem, or better, Eevreem, which is the Hebrew word for Hebrew! (You can see Eevreem in Hebrew; look at this part: Hebrew.) Since this word means he crossed over, it prophesied regarding what would happen to the Israelis later: that they, as a people, will cross over.

What will they cross over? They will cross over every border in the world behind which they are located in order to come to the Land of Israel. They will cross the oceans on dry land (since both ships and airplanes won’t be taking them as passengers; the airplanes won’t be flying at all, and the ships will not be friendly to them, for the most part). Thus, the Israelis will cross over all parts of the world to come to the Land of Israel, and to arrive at Mount Zion.

19. Why will these other peoples be silent as a stone while the Israelis cross over? They know by now that any interference with these crossings of the Israelis will get them killed! They will know that Yehovah is fighting for the Israelis! They will know that they won’t want to see more of His terrifying wrath against them! Yet, they won’t take a stand with Yehovah; they will still hate the Israelis while these things occur.

20. How did Yehovah acquire this people (of Israel)? He paid for them with His own blood: the blood of Messiah Yeshua! He paid justice for the penalty that the Israelis owed, taking upon Himself what was due to Israel for sin! That is why He received the beatings, spittings, scourgings (whippings that include tearing skin) and other tortures before He was put to death. Because He paid such a high price for them, He isn’t about to lose them to His enemies!

21. To where will Yehovah bring the Israelis? He will bring them to the Mountain of His inheritance established for His dwelling: to Mount Zion! That mountain will be very large, by that time! It is located in Jerusalem right now, but later Jerusalem will be located in it!

22. Why does the text state that Yehovah will plant them in the Mountain? Yehovah pictures the Israelis as being like a tree or a vine. He greatly desires that the Israelis bear fruit (like a good tree or vine), and the only way they will be able to do that is if they are planted (since a tree or a vine needs to be planted to do well). This also shows that their permanent residence will be in that mountain.

23. Why is it called “the Mountain of Thine inheritance?” Yehovah will inherit the people of Israel! Yeshua went through death; inheritances are normally passed on to the next generation after death. Yeshua came alive after being dead; He will inherit the people of Israel! That inheritance will occur in Mount Zion, the mountain being discussed in this text. (As you can see, this text goes far beyond the crossing of the Red Sea!)

24. Where will Yehovah dwell (in this text)? He will dwell in Mount Zion, and more specifically, in the Temple in Jerusalem on the north side of Mount Zion.

25. Will Yehovah be visible for folks to see? Yes! He will be visible, and in the form of Yeshua! Folks will be able to see Him. He will radiate light so that the entirety of Mount Zion will be lit up at night as if the sun is shining! Yet, folks will be able to approach Him.

26. What does “Thou acted, Yehovah” mean? This means that Yehovah took action; it doesn’t mean that He played a role as if in a play.

27. What action did He take? He stood for the people of Israel (and for the friends of the people of Israel). He did many miracles to make certain that the people stayed alive.

28. What is a sanctuary? This is normally defined as a safe place, a place where someone or some animal can remain unmolested or hassled. The word has a different meaning in the Bible, however. Sanctuary contains the word sanctus meaning holy in Latin. It is a place that belongs to another. In this case, it belongs to Yehovah! It refers to the Temple and its surroundings.

28. The text states, “Thine hands established the Sanctuary of my Lords.” Who is thine, and who is my Lords? Thine refers to Yehovah; my Lords refers to Yeshua! Yehovah will establish the Temple of Yeshua in Jerusalem, in Mount Zion, in Israel!

29. How will Yehovah’s hands establish the Sanctuary of “my Lords”? Yehovah will both save the Israelis and their friends alive, bringing them to Mount Zion, and thus bringing what the Temple typifies (pictures) to Mount Zion, and He will build the Temple (the physical structure) Himself!

VIII. The Length of Yehovah’s Reign (verse 18)

How long will Yehovah reign? He will reign to Hider, and onward!

Questions

1. What is Hider? This refers to the time border between what is revealed in the Bible and what hides by not being revealed in the Bible. Thus, Hider will be a time just after the New Earth has been populated with the Saints.

Hider can also refer to the time border between what is revealed in the Bible and what hides before the earth was created!

Yet, Hider is a good way to describe Yehovah Himself, since He hides Himself so that humans can live by faith! If He were visible, no one could live by faith since whatever is seen isn’t known by faith, but instead by sight.

2. What does Hider and onward describe? It describes the time border of what is revealed by the Bible and what comes after that hasn’t been revealed, and beyond that time without an ending in time! Thus, it describes forever in time starting with the New Earth. Yehovah’s reign won’t end.

3. When will Yehovah start to reign? He will start to reign at the end of the Tribulation and just before the Millennium (thousand-years).

4. Over whom will He reign? He will reign over all the races, over all the earth, over all the universe, and over everything. He will be King over all kings (and there will be kings over the larger people groups) and Lord over all lords (there will also be lords over smaller people groups).

IX. The End of Pharaoh’s Horse, Chariot and Horsemen (verse 19)

Pharaoh’s horse accompanied Pharaoh’s chariot and Pharaoh’s horsemen into the Sea. Yehovah caused the waters of the Sea to return upon them. The children of Israel had walked by means of the dry seabed in the midst of the Sea; that isn’t what happened to Pharaoh’s army.

Questions

1. The text states, “For Pharaoh’s horse came with his chariot and with his horsemen into the Sea.” It doesn’t state that Pharaoh himself came into the Sea. How could a reader know with certainty that Pharaoh went into the Sea? I looked for this, and I found it in one place:

Psalm 136:13 To Him Who divided the Red Sea into parts, for His Grace is to Hider, 14and made Israel to pass through the midst of it, for His Grace is to Hider, 15and overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, for His Grace is to Hider…

2. Why would this text mention Pharaoh’s horse and his chariot, and not mention Pharaoh? It is as if Pharaoh’s horse and chariot are more important than Pharaoh! Yet, where his horse and his chariot go, he normally also goes. Pharaoh drove that horse and the chariot into the Sea! That was truly not smart!

3. Upon whom did Yehovah return the waters, according to this text? He returned the waters upon Pharaoh’s horse and Pharaoh’s chariot! That chariot represented the total power of the Egyptian army!

4. Why does the text repeat that the children of Israel walked via the dry in the midst of the Sea? This is so important; Yehovah made certain that readers realized that they did walk in the very midst of the Sea, and they walked on dry land. This will occur again in the future.

X. Tambourines, Dances and Singing (verses 20-21)

Miriam the prophetess, Moshe’s and Aharon’s sister, took the tambourine via her own hand. All the women exited after her by means of tambourines and dances!

Miriam answered to them as they responded in celebration: “Sing ye to Yehovah!” She then explained, “For heightening, He heightened horse! And He elevated his chariot in the Sea!”

Questions

1. What is a prophetess? A prophetess is a woman who consistently and infallibly (that is, perfectly and with no error) quotes a god (the Spirit of Yehovah, in this case: the testimony of Yeshua). When she is quoting Yehovah, she is always saying exactly what He is saying, using exactly the same wording that He is using.

2. Did Miriam often prophesy? Being a prophetess doesn’t indicate how often one prophesies. A true prophet might not prophesy for a year; Yeshua might not have anything to say for a year! A true prophet might be prophesying daily; Yehovah might have much to say!

3. If Miriam was Aharon’s sister, who was her other brother? Her other brother was Moshe!

4. What did she do with the tambourine? She sang with it, using it as the rhythm accompaniment!

5. Was the music fast, or was it slow? It was very fast and very rhythmic!

6. Did all the women in Israel follow Miriam with their tambourines? All the women who normally accompanied her when she sang prophesies did so. Some women were too old to accompany her; some didn’t sing or play the tambourine; some didn’t dance. Those who accompanied her could sing, dance, and play the tambourine.

7. Was this a normal way to deliver prophecies of Yehovah? This was a normal way of teaching the Israelis things that they needed to learn! I don’t know how many prophecies were delivered this way, but all the Psalms in the scroll of the Psalms are designed to be sung, to have musical instruments accompany them, and, I propose, for dancing!

8. Was the music pretty? Like most African music (which it was), it was beautiful! The words were given by Yeshua and were infallible (unable to fail), and the music would have been of the same quality!

9. Was the dancing pretty? It was beautiful! The women wore garments that were very colorful, as has been common in African dances. This was an excellent way to teach the Israelis to recite the speech of God exactly as Yehovah gave it!

10. Verse 21 states, “Miriam answered to them.” Whom did she answer, and what did they say in the first place? She answered after the entire group recited the speech of God: the prophecy that she brought to the Israelis. She did the refrain: “Sing-ye to Yehovah! For heightening, He heightened horse! And He elevated his chariot in the Sea!”

XI. Healing of Bitterness (verses 22-26)

Moshe journeyed with Israel from the Ending Sea. They exited the land unto Ox Desert. They then walked three days via desert.

The Israelis didn’t find water. Instead, they came to a place that seemed to have water, but the water was bitter; it was impossible to drink it (without becoming sick or dying). The waters were bitter. Thus, Moshe named this area Bitter.

The Israelis had been angering at Moshe because of the lack of water. The people lodged upon Moshe, coming very close and pushing on him, working themselves up to become violent. They said, “What shall we drink?” Moshe screamed to Yehovah. Yehovah responded by teaching Moshe a particular tree. He took from that tree and slung it unto the waters. The waters sweetened!

Yehovah put to Israel a statute and a justice at those waters. Yehovah proved Israel there. He then said, “If hearkening, thou wilt hearken to the voice of Yehovah thy Gods, and thou wilt do the straight in His eyes, and thou wilt ‘ear’ to His commandments, and thou wilt guard all His statutes, I will not put upon thee all the sicknesses that I put into Egypt.” Yehovah then identified Himself: “For I am Yehovah thy Healer!”

Questions

1. The text states, “And they exited unto Ox Desert.” What did they exit? They exited the area of the Ending Sea and Egypt unto this desert.

2. Wasn’t going three days without water quite hard on them? It was hard on them—on all of them. This was during the spring of the year, however, and the heat wasn’t at its height. Also, the Israelis had cattle, including milking cattle, and they also had milking goats. The lack of water was hard on the cattle, but the Israelis weren’t dying; they were thirsty.

3. What does “they came Bitternessward” mean? They came to a place called Bitterness where the water looked good, but it was too bitter to drink.

4. Who is he who called her name Bitter, and who is her? I am thinking that it is Moshe who named the place, but it may have been someone who had come to that place long before who named it Bitter; Yehovah agreed with that name for that place. Her refers to the place, since a place can be feminine or masculine.

5. The next statement is, “And the people, they lodged upon Moshe.” What does this mean? To lodge is to come into a person’s space and to just stay there. If a person lodges at a motel, the person comes into the space (the room) and just stays there (overnight). In the same way, lodging includes going up to a person, coming close to that person, and not going away. This can be to express a protest (to ‘lodge’ a protest), or it can be to just ‘hang around.’ Little children are good at lodging if they want something from an adult. In this case, an entire group of Israelis went to Moshe to surround him and to press him because of the trouble they now had, being without water.

6. When they asked, “What shall we drink,” were they being respectful toward Moshe? Though the words sound respectful, they were ready to kill him already! They didn’t foresee this occurring.

7. Why did Moshe scream unto Yehovah? The Israelis were loud! Also, Moshe saw that the Israelis were about to kill him over this.

8. What does “And Yehovah taught him a tree” mean? Yehovah didn’t just tell Moshe which tree to use, but how to use the tree to change the waters. Yehovah gave Moshe instructions.

9. What did Moshe sling unto the waters? He slung parts of the tree—the parts that Yehovah taught, prepared in the way that Yehovah taught.

10. How could one tree sweeten bodies of water that are together enough to give drink to so many Israelis and their cattle, and still have plenty of water left over? If the sap in the tree contains a chemical that reacts with the chemical that causes bitterness, some chemicals have very great effects in very small amounts. Yehovah designed a particular tree to contain a chemical that will react with bitter waters to cause those waters to become sweet. The text doesn’t say how much of the tree was used, or whether more than one tree of that species had to be used; it just states that there was one kind of tree that Yehovah taught Moshe, and Moshe put that tree into the waters; the effect was that the waters now tasted sweet and good!

11. If someone came upon waters today that were bitter, and if that same type of tree was in the area, would throwing the tree into the waters have the same effect? Yehovah gave this information so that it will be useful during the Tribulation that will occur many centuries from now! It will be lifesaving at that time, too!

12. What does “He put a statute and a justice to him there” mean, and who is him? Him is Israel. He is Yehovah. Yehovah put a statute and a justice to Israel there.

A statute is a rule—that is, something that is to be done or to not be done. The word statute pictures such a rule as engraved in stone—that means that it is fixed and won’t be erased.

The statute that Yehovah put to Israel will be described in the next text. The same is true of the justice.

Justice is making a right decision based on all true facts, and following through on that right decision.

13. The next text states, “And He proved him there.” What does proved mean? To prove is to test someone or something out; to see if it will be able to take what it needs to be able to take. Proving a person might involve seeing if the person is strong and tough enough to take insults without responding back in an unkind way, for example. In the case of our text, Yehovah proved Israel by supplying no water for several days, and then bringing Israel to a place of bitter waters to see if Israel will ask Yehovah and will wait for Him to do the necessary miracle. The Israelis will not prove to be consistent or good for quite a while; they will prove to be perfect later in the future starting with the last part of the Tribulation.

14. What must Israel do in order for Yehovah to not put on Israel all the sicknesses that He put into Egypt? Israel as a group must do all of the following:

  • Israel must hearken to the voice of Yehovah, the Gods of Israel
  • Israel must do what is straight in Yehovah’s eyes—that is, what isn’t crooked, but totally ‘on the level’
  • Israel must ‘ear’ to His commandments (put his ear to truly hear what Yehovah commands and all that He commands
  • Israel must guard all Yehovah’s statutes (rules)

If Israel fails in any of these areas, Yehovah will put all the sicknesses that He put into Egypt upon Israel.

15. What, then, is the statute that Yehovah put to Israel? The statute is the list above! It includes guarding all His statutes!

16. What is the justice that Yehovah put to Israel? The justice is this: If Israel will do the list above, Yehovah won’t put the sicknesses of Egypt upon Israel. If Israel won’t do the list above, Yehovah will put the sicknesses of Egypt upon Israel!

17. Yehovah’s last statement (here) is, “For I am Yehovah thy Healer.” Why did He say this at this point in the text? Israel won’t do the list above at most times in the history of Israel’s existence. Thus, Israel will become sick with devastations that will be those that He put into Egypt. Yet, Yehovah can and will heal Israel anytime that Israel does according to this short list. Yehovah is the only one who can heal Israel!

XII. Camping at Seventy Palms Resort (verse 27)

The Israelis then traveled toward a place called Their Ram. There were twelve eyes of water—places where water refills if water is withdrawn—in that place, as well as seventy palm trees. The Israelis camped there next to the waters.

Questions

1. What does “they came Their-Ramward” mean? The name of the location is “Their Ram.” They came toward that location; thus, they came “Their-Ram”-ward!

2. What are eyes of water? They are places where water comes out of the soil or sand, watering like human eyes water. Thus, if the water is used up, soon more water replaces the water that was used. Since these places resemble human eyes by watering, they were called eyes of water. The amount of water can be many gallons. Twelve eyes of water were enough to supply several million Israelis and all their flocks and herds.

3. What is so significant about seventy palms being there? Seventy palms give off a lot of water, and must be supplied with water from the ground. They also produce fruit; one type of fruit of a palm is the date. A date palm tree can be a huge tree! Seventy palms can give shade, and this place was an oasis (a place of water and plants in the middle of the desert).

4. How big were the waters at that place? I can’t tell how big the waters were, but the Israelis found this a very good place to camp with plenty of shoreline for them and their animals to get to the waters.

5. Was this place populated, and is it there today? My impression is that it wasn’t populated, though it sounds like it would have been a good place to live if one could trade with others for necessities. I don’t know if it is there today. Climates change, and waters can dry up while new water places can form.

6. Were the Israelis happy going camping? The Israelis will not be happy during the entire time that Moshe is leading them!

Concerning the Sabbath

Concerning the Sabbath

Copyright ©February 6, 2001 Saar Shalom Center

What is the non-Israeli Saint’s relationship to the Sabbath? What is the Israeli’s relationship to the Sabbath when the Temple is not functioning? I will explore these issues by using every Biblical text translated Sabbath or Sabbaths. Only pertinent texts will be considered.

1.  The Basic Sabbath Command

Exodus 16:23 And he said to them, “This is what Yehovah has said: ‘To-morrow is the rest, the holy sabbath, of Yehovah. Bake what ye will bake, and cook what ye will cook; and lay up for yourselves all that remains over to be kept for the morning.'” And they laid it up for the morning as Moses had commanded. And it did not stink, neither was there any worm in it. And Moses said, “Eat it today. For today is sabbath to Yehovah. Today ye shall not find it in the field. Six days shall ye gather it. And on the seventh day is sabbath—on it there shall be none.” And it came to pass on the seventh day that there went out from the people to gather, and they found none. And Yehovah said to Moses, “How long do ye refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? See, for Yehovah hath given you the sabbath; therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread for two days. Abide every man in his place. No man is to go from his place on the seventh day.” And the people rested on the seventh day.

The Sabbath was identified by no manna to collect. The Israelis were commanded to stay in their tents, cook what they were going to cook, and not do manna gathering. This text pertained to the Israelis during the time of the manna, and cannot be applied to other times and periods without manna.

2. The Ten-Commandment Sabbath

Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day to sanctify it. Six days shalt thou labour and do all thy work. And the seventh day is the sabbath of Yehovah thy God. Thou shalt not do any work–thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy bondman, nor thy handmaid, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days Yehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore Yehovah blessed the sabbath day and sanctify him.

This text involves the following:

·   Sanctify the Sabbath. The Sabbath is the property of Yehovah, for the purpose of ceasing from one’s labour (the word Sabbath means cease). Every individual Israeli must do this.

·   Work six days. No shorter work week was given to the Israelis. (Anyone who could not work would not be in violation of the ceasing of the Sabbath.)

·   Slaves, servants and work animals must cease from labor. Every common branch of Judaism permits hired workers to do labour for the Jewish community on the Sabbath in defiance of the above command.

·   The Israelis must rest because Yehovah rested. The Israelis must reflect this within their own gates. This is not pertinent to gentiles. Israelis who obtained properties on the other side of the Jordan were commanded to observe the same ceasing.

The gender of the pronoun referring to the Sabbath is masculine, but the word for Sabbath is feminine. The Sabbath must have a wider significance.

3. The Sabbath As a Sign Between Yehovah and the Children of Israel

Exodus 31:13 And thou, speak thou unto the children of Israel, saying, “Surely my Sabbaths shall ye guard. For he is a sign between me and you throughout your generations to know that I, Yehovah, am your sanctifier. And ye shall guard the Sabbath. For he is holy to you. The profaner of her dying shall die. For all who do in her errands, and that being shall be cut off from the midst of her people. Six days shall errands be done. And on the seventh day is the sabbath of Sabbath(s), holy to Yehovah. Every errand-maker on the sabbath day dying shall die. And the children of Israel shall guard the sabbath to do the sabbath to their generations, a covenant of hidden-time. Between me and between the children of Israel, a sign is he to the hiding. For six days Yehovah made the heavens and the earth. And on the seventh day he ceased and was ‘re-beinged.'”

The Sabbath must be guarded and watched, making sure that nothing violates.

The word Shabbat (Sabbath) is feminine, yet the Hebrew regularly refers to it as masculine, and like a person. In traditional Judaism, the Sabbath is called a queen and is hailed in as the sun sets. This violates the regular spelling of the masculine pronoun. The Massorites (who placed the pronunciation dottings into the Hebrew text) placed feminine pronunciation dottings over the masculine pronouns referring to the Sabbath. It is read as if the Sabbath is a ‘she’ rather than a ‘he’. (One way certain texts that are believed to be spelled wrong are corrected is by changing these dottings.) If the masculine pronoun is erroneous, why is it always made at the same times and places in many texts? It isn’t in error. The Sabbath is the person of the Messiah.

How can the Sabbath be a sign that Yehovah is the Sanctifier of the Israelis? A sign is a person, place, thing or event which serves as an evidence to another that something is true or will take place. If the Sabbath is the Messiah, the Sanctifier of Israel, this is a sign! How can a ceasing be a person? How can the Messiah be Yehovah Who sanctifies Israel? He is. According to Judaism, an infinite God cannot be born as a man. Yet Yehovah is omnipotent, and all things (morally and ethically right) are possible. The miracle of the Sabbath is Messiah, Israel’s Sabbath.

Guarding the Sabbath against violation is the safeguard against violating the Messiah Who is holy to Israel. Without him, Israel has no rest. He belongs to Israel, being a son of the herd:

Exodus 29:1  And this is the thing that thou shalt do unto them to hallow them, to minister unto me in the priest’s office: Take one young  bullock (literally, a son of the herd).

The Sabbath is called her, and the one profaning her will certainly die. The Sabbath is a type, and Messiah is the antitype (the answer to the mystery of the type). Profaning her incurs the death penalty. Yehovah thus shows Israel the importance of the Sabbath and what she typifies. Profaning anything is treating it commonly rather than special, as if it is no one’s property. A public telephone is a profane telephone (even though it is owned by the telephone company) because anyone may use it to call. A private telephone is a holy telephone. Profane and holy are opposites.

The word being (in and that being shall be cut off from the midst of her people) takes a masculine pronoun. This is followed by she shall be cut off from the midst of her people, showing the relationship between the being (feminine) and the man (masculine) who is occupying the being. By making the pronoun feminine and saying she shall be cut off from her people, the text is not only referring to the man who is violating, but the being that will be damned. A man cut off from his people will die, but a being cut off from her people is damned! Yehovah sees this Sabbath with this importance.

What is the Sabbath of Sabbath(s) (in and on the seventh day is the sabbath of Sabbath(s), holy to Yehovah)? The Hebrew Shabbat Shabbaton is special compared to all Sabbaths. But this is a regular Sabbath! The regular Sabbath is that special to Yehovah. Violating this Sabbath is contemning all Sabbaths, and is holding the Messiah Himself in contempt.

Yehovah commanded the Israelis to guard the sabbath to do the sabbath to their generations—as long as they exist. Parts of the Sabbath require the Temple or Tabernacle, however, and they cannot be done according to the Torah until the next Temple is built.

The Sabbath is a covenant. Anyone thinking that he is required to do the Sabbath must also think himself in this particular covenant with Yehovah. This is not a covenant of Salvation or Grace, but is part of the whole Torah made between Yehovah and physical, literal Israel.

The hiding in a sign is he to the hiding is the Hebrew word OLAM, the opposite of YODEA, knowing. Yehovah revealed many things in earth’s history and future. Yehovah did not reveal events before the creation of the earth, nor after its destruction (with a very few exceptions). These are hidden. A covenant which is to the hiding is one which stands until the earth is destroyed with fire. At that time, the covenant will no longer be in force. The Torah of Moses commands will not be needed occupants of the New Earth, because it was designed and given to keep unbelieving Israelis alive until they might come to faith. In the same manner, the Sabbath covenant has force until the earth is no more and the New Earth exists. There will be no need to cease from one’s labours.

And on the seventh day He ceased and was ‘re-beinged’. To cease and ‘re-being’ is to stop working and doing errands, and to have one’s being restored. If Yehovah did this for the sake of man, it is important for man.

4.  Regarding the Fire

Exodus 35:1 And Moses congregated all the witnessing-group of the children of Israel, and said to them, “These are the words which Yehovah commanded to do them. Six days shall an errand be done. And on the seventh day the Holy-One shall be to you. The sabbath of Sabbath(s) is to Yehovah. Every doer in him of an errand will die. Ye shall not kindle a fire in all your dwellings on the Day of Ceasing.”

A witnessing group is a congregation witnessing an event. The Scriptures declare that Israelis are Yehovah’s witnesses (even if the cult group thinks that it replaces Israel). Yehovah introduces a new aspect of the Sabbath to be guarded. Fire kindling requires real work. This is not the transferring of fire from one burning fire location to another, but kindling—striking or rubbing in order to make sparks or use friction to start a fire. If an Israeli’s fire went out, he could obtain fire from a neighbour.

5.  The Day of Coverings Sabbath

Leviticus 16:29 And she shall be to you for a statute of hidden time. In the seventh month on the tenth of the month, ye shall humble your beings. And every errand ye shall not do–the native-born and the sojourner who sojourneth among you. For on that day he shall cover for you to cleanse you from all your sins before Yehovah. Ye shall be clean! A sabbath of Sabbath(s) she is to you. And ye shall humble your beings, a statute of hidden-time.

This is the Day of the Coverings Sabbath, YOM HAKIPPUREEM. No errand is permissible. This Sabbath requires the Israelis to humble their beings, knowing their true rank, position and responsibilities before Yehovah and men, and living that way from then on. Coverings for sins and cleanness are provided for the Israelis when they truly and permanently humble themselves before Yehovah.

6.  General View of the Sabbaths

Leviticus 19:2 Speak unto all the witnessing-group of the children of Israel, and say unto them, “Holy-ones shall ye be. For I Yehovah your Gods am holy. Ye shall fear a man his mother and his father. And my Sabbaths shall ye guard. I am Yehovah your Gods.

Yehovah describes Himself in the plural form, being all Israel’s Gods. There are no other true and living gods. The Israelis are commanded to be holy ones, owned only by Yehovah and living that way. Yehovah belongs to His Saints, and is also Holy. He is the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, owned by them as God. Any Israeli who fears Him and obeys His commandments also owns Him as his Gods.

While the Israelis must fear Yehovah, they must also fear mother and father. (The text does not refer to parental abuse, which in Israel was illegal.) Fearing parents does not mean that the child must always obey. If the parents violated Torah and commanded their children to participate, they had to obey the Torah rather than parents.

The plural Sabbaths is used because there are different Sabbaths. (‘Seventh Day Adventists’ claim to keep the Sabbath whle ignoring many Sabbaths. Folks like to pick and choose, especially when they think they replace Israel.) The Sabbaths are to be guarded because Yehovah is the Israelis’ Gods. Fearing the parents and guarding the Sabbaths are in the same category according to Yehovah.

7.  Avoiding Pollution of the Land

Leviticus 19:29 Do not profane thy daughter, to give her up to whoredom lest the land practice whoredom, and the land become full of a plot. My Sabbaths shall ye guard and my sanctuary shall ye fear. I am Yehovah. Turn not unto necromancers and unto soothsayers. Seek not after them to make yourselves unclean. I am Yehovah your God.

The Sabbaths guard Yehovah’s land from pollution. Causing one’s daughter to whore for profit, using necromancers, etc. will pollute Yehovah’s land, and He will throw offenders off. The Sabbaths must be guarded, and Yehovah’s sanctuary is the be feared. The Israelis must fear Yehovah, mother, father, and the sanctuary. If the Sabbaths are kept, the land will not be overworked.

8.  An Introduction of All the Sabbaths Starting with the Friday-Evening Sabbath

Leviticus 23:1 And Yehovah spoke to Moses to say, “Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them, ‘The appointments of Yehovah which ye shall call them callings of the Holy-One, these are they–mine appointments. Six days thou shalt do an errand. And in the seventh day is a Sabbath of Sabbath(s), a calling of the Holy-One. Every errand ye shall not do. He is the Sabbath to Yehovah in all your settlements.'”

The Sabbath is an appointment, a calling of the Holy-One. It belongs to Yehovah and must be done in all the settlements of the Israelis.

9.  The Passover

Leviticus 23:4 “‘These are the appointments of Yehovah, callings of the Holy-One which ye shall call them in their appointment. In the first month in the fourteenth of the month, between the two evenings is the Passover to Yehovah. And on the fifteenth day to this month is the solemnity of the Matzahs to Yehovah. Seven days shall ye eat matzahs (unleavened bread). On the first day a calling of the Holy-One shall be to you. Every errand of work ye shall not do. And ye shall bring-near fireward to Yehovah seven days. In the seventh day is a calling of the Holy-One. Every errand of work ye shall not do.'”

The Passover is another Sabbath given to Israel, and not to another other race.

10.  Waving

Leviticus 23:9 And Yehovah spoke unto Moses to say, “Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them, ‘When ye shall come unto the land which I am giving unto you, and ye shall harvest her harvest, and ye shall bring the first Omer of your harvest unto the priest. And he shall wave the sheaf before Yehovah for your acceptance. From the next day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave him. And ye shall make, in the day of your waving the Omer, a perfect lamb the son of his year to an ascending-sacrifice to Yehovah and his grain-offering, two tenths of fine flour mingled with oil, fireward to Yehovah–a sweet savour, and her drink-offering of wine, a fourth of the hin. And ye shall not eat bread and roasted-grain and green-grain until this self-same day, until ye have brought the brought-near-offering of your Gods, a statute of hidden-time to your generations in all your dwellings. And ye shall count for yourselves from the morning after the Sabbath from the day that ye brought the Omer of the wave-offering, seven Sabbaths. They shall be perfect. Unto the-day-after the seventh sabbath shall ye count fifty day(s). And ye shall bring-near a new grain-offering to Yehovah. Out of your dwellings shall ye bring bread of waving, two of two tenths of fine flour they shall be. Leaven they shall be baked, first-fruits to Yehovah. And ye shall bring-near with the bread seven perfect lambs, the son of a year, and one bull, the son of the herd, and two rams. They shall be an ascending-sacrifice to Yehovah, and their grain-offering and their drinks-offering, fireward–a sweet savour to Yehovah. And ye shall make one kid of the goats for a sin-offering and two lambs the son of a year for a sacrifice of peaces-offering. And the priest shall wave them upon the bread of the first-fruits a wave-offering before Yehovah upon the two lambs. They shall be holy to Yehovah to priest. And ye shall call in this selfsame day a calling of the Holy-One. He shall be to you. Every errand of work ye shall not do, a statute of hidden-time in all your settlements to your generations. And in your harvesting the harvest of your land, thou shalt not finish the corner of thy field in thy harvest. And the gleaning of thy harvest thou shalt not glean. To the humble and to the stranger thou shalt forsake them. I am Yehovah your God.'”

And Yehovah spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, ‘In the seventh month on the first of the month shall ye have a rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. No manner of servile work shall ye do; and ye shall present an offering by fire to Yehovah.'” And Yehovah spoke unto Moshe to say, “Only, in the tenth to this seventh month, a Day of the Coverings is he. A calling of the Holy-One he shall be to you. And ye shall humble your beings. And ye shall-bring-near fireward to Yehovah. And every errand ye shall not do in this selfsame day. For the Day of Coverings is he to cover upon you to the faces of Yehovah your Gods. For all of the being which will not be humbled in this selfsame day, and she shall-be-cut-off from her peoples! And all the being which shall do every errand in this selfsame day, and I will damn that being from the midst of her people. Every errand ye shall not do, a statute of hidden-time to your generations in all your settlements. He is a Sabbath of Sabbath(s) to you. And ye shall humble your beings in the ninth to the month in the evening. From evening unto evening ye shall cease your Sabbath.”

And Yehovah spoke unto Moshe to say, “Speak unto the children of Israel to say, ‘In the fifteenth day to this seventh month is the Solemnity of the Succot (booths) seven days to Yehovah. In the first day is a calling of the Holy-One. All errand of work ye shall not do. Seven days ye shall bring-near fireward to Yehovah. In the eighth day, a calling of the Holy-One will be to you. And ye shall bring-near fireward to Yehovah. He is an arresting. Every errand of work ye shall not do.

“‘These are the Appointments of Yehovah which ye shall call them, callings of the Holy-One to bring-near fireward to Yehovah ascending-sacrifice and grain-offering, sacrifice and pouring-offerings, a matter of a day in his day besides the Sabbaths of Yehovah and besides your gifts and besides all your vows and besides all your liberalities which ye shall give to Yehovah. Only in the fifteenth day to the seventh month, when ye gather the produce of the land, ye shall solemnize the Solemnity of Yehovah seven days. In the first day is a Shabbaton and in the eighth day is a Shabbaton. And ye shall take for yourselves in the first day the fruits of a majestic tree, palms of palm-trees and a cluster of a tree of compacts and willows of the brook. And ye shall rejoice before Yehovah your Gods seven days. And ye shall solemnize him, the Solemnity to Yehovah, seven days in the year–a statute of hidden-time to your generations. In the seventh month ye shall solemnize him. In Succot ye shall sit (reside) seven days–every native-born in Israel shall sit in succot so-that your generations shall know that in succot I made-sit (reside) the children of Israel when I sent-them-out from the land of Egypt. I am Yehovah your Gods.'” And Moses declared the set feasts of Yehovah to the children of Israel.

The Israelis are commanded to cease from errands, but the sacrifices go on seven days a week. Some priests do their labours on the Sabbaths. It is their work to oversee the sacrifices and to keep the altar clean.

The Sabbaths act as timing marks. And ye shall count for yourselves from the morning after the Sabbath from the day that ye brought the Omer of the wave-offering, seven Sabbaths. The timings of other events depend upon these Sabbaths. Yehovah did not give other races Sabbaths to mark events.

Verses 23 through 25 record the shortest Israeli solemnity, a blowing of Trumpets. This is a Shabbaton (a strong word for a Sabbath). It has the following stipulations:

·         No Israeli may run an errand.

·         The Israelis (plural) must bring near fireward to Yehovah (what they must bring is found in Numbers 29).

·         There is to be a blowing of trumpets. These trumpets are silver, not the shofars (ram’s horns):

Numbers 10:1 And Yehovah spake unto Moses, saying, Take thee two trumpets of silver. Of turned-work shalt thou make them. And they shall be for thee for the calling of the witnessing-group and for the journeying of the camps. And they shall blast with them. And all the witnessing-group shall keep-appointment-unto thee at the opening of the Tent of Appointment. And if they blast with one: and the princes the heads of the thousands of Israel shall keep-appointment unto thee. And ye shall blast a sounding. And the camps that lie on the east parts shall go journey. And ye shall blast a second sounding. And the camps that lie on the south side shall journey. A sounding shall they blast for their journeys. And when the congregation is to be congregated, ye shall blast, but ye shall not do a sounding (i.e., not an extended trumpet blowing: no long notes). And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blast with the trumpets. And they shall be to you for a statute of hidden-time to your generations. And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall sound with the trumpets. And ye shall be remembered before Yehovah your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies. And in the day of your gladness and in your appointments and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blast with the trumpets over your ascending offerings and over the sacrifices of your peaces offerings. And they shall be to you for a memorial before your God. I am Yehovah your God.

Numbers 29:1 And in the seventh month on the first of the month a calling of the Holy-One shall be to you. All errand work ye shall not do. A day of sounding shall be to you. And ye shall make an ascending -offering for a sweet savour to Yehovah, one bull the son of the herd, one ram, seven perfect lambs sons of a year. And their grain-offering is flour mingled with oil, three tenths for a bullock, two tenths for a ram, and one tenth for one lamb throughout the seven lambs, And one kid of the goats a sin offering to cover upon you beside the ascending-sacrifice of the month and his grain-offering, and the daily ascending-sacrifice and his grain offering, and their pouring-offerings according to their justice–a sweet savour fireward to Yehovah.

The silver trumpets must be blasted the first of each month and in the seventh month. This Sabbath requires both the sounding of the silver trumpets and the blood sacrifices commanded. It is a memorial event—something is being remembered. What is this event? (I don’t yet know.)

And ye shall call in this selfsame day a calling of the Holy-One. This Sabbath requires this. Anyone thinking he can keep these Sabbaths outside of the Land of Israel without doing these requirements including the blowing of the trumpets and the sacrifices is dilluded.

Verse 26 refers to the Day of the Coverings which is a Sabbath of Sabbath(s) in which the Israelis must humble their beings. It is like the weekly Sabbath except for the death penalty for any Israeli who does not humble his being in it.

Verses 37 and 38 include the following which must be done along with the Sabbaths:

·         The appointments of Yehovah

·         The various sacrifices and offerings

·         Gifts to Yehovah

·         Vows to Yehovah

·         Voluntary offerings which one’s heart prompts him to do

Not included in this list are the various functions of the priesthood on behalf of Israel which also must be done.

The Sabbath does not stand alone. Many other things must accompany the Sabbath in order for the Sabbath to be being properly kept or guarded.

Verse 39 includes two Shabbatons, the first and last days of Succot, or Booths:

·         The normal Sabbath requirements must be met including the doing of no errand, and thus a ceasing from one’s labours.

·         Boughs of leafy trees, willows, palm branches, whatever grows on trees as leaves are to be taken, and the one taking them is to rejoice before Yehovah seven days.

·         Each native-born Israeli must dwell in booths seven days because Yehovah caused the Israelis to dwell in booths when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.

One Sabbath requires rejoicing while another humbling one’s self. One requires taking branches while another requires that no sticks be gathered. All have one requirement in common—no errand may be run. All are given to Israel. Anyone who wants to join with the Israelis to become part of the People of Israel may voluntarily do so (and thus take on the responsibilities and the dangers).

11.  The Sabbath Table

Leviticus 24:1 And Yehovah spoke unto Moshe to say, “Command the children of Israel. And they shall take unto thee pure finely-cut olive oil for the light-bearer to make-ascend a lamp always. From outside to the vail of the testimony in the Tent of Appointment Aharon will order him from evening unto morning to the faces of Yehovah always, a statute of hidden-time to their generations. Upon the clean Menorah he will order the lamps to the faces of Yehovah always.

“And thou shalt take fine-flour, and thou shalt bake her, twelve Hallahs. Twelfth-portions will be to one hallah. And thou shalt put them, two orders, six of the order, upon the clean table to the faces of Yehovah. And thou shalt give upon the order pure frankincense. And she shall be for bread for I-will-remember-her fireward to Yehovah. In the Day of the Sabbath, in the Day of the Sabbath, he will order him before Yehovah always from with the children of Israel, a covenant of hidden-time. And she shall be to Aharon and to his sons. And they shall eat him in the Holy Place. For Holy of Holies is he to him from the fires of Yehovah, a statute of hidden-time.”

The pronouns switch between thou and he. The thou is Moses, and the he is Aharon or one of his sons in his lineage. Verse 8 shows Aharon’s Sabbath responsibility to order the table before Yehovah. The Sabbath cannot be kept if Aharon or one of his sons is not ordering the table. The Tabernacle or Temple is necessary for the Sabbath to be guarded according to the command of Yehovah.

12.  The Land Gets a Break

Leviticus 25:1 And Yehovah spoke unto Moshe in Mount Sinai to say, “Speak unto the sons of Israel, and say thou unto them, ‘When ye shall come unto the land which I am giving to you, and the land shall cease a Sabbath to Yehovah. Six years thou shalt sow thy field and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard and thou shalt gather her produce. And in the seventh year shall be Shabbat Shabbaton to the land, Shabbat to Yehovah. Thy field thou shalt not sow and thy vineyard thou shalt not prune. The volunteer of thy harvest thou shalt not harvest and the grapes of thy separated-one thou shalt not diminish. The year of the Shabbaton will be to the land. And the Shabbat of the Land shall be to you for food for thee and for thy servant and for thy female-servant and for thine hired-worker and for thy settler of the sojourners with thee. And for thy beast and for the animal which is in thy land shall be all her produce for food.'”

The land of Israel has a ceasing (Sabbath) just as every individual in Israel. Animals, slaves and the land must guard the Sabbath. Yehovah threw the Israelis off the land because they worked the soil on her Sabbaths.

13.  Jubilee

Leviticus 25:8 And thou shalt publish to thee seven Sabbaths of years, seven years seven strokes. And they shall be to thee the days of seven Sabbaths of the years, nine and forty year(s). And thou-shalt-make-pass a blasting shofar in the seventh month, in the tenth to the month. In the Day of the Coverings ye shall-make-pass the shofar in all your land. And ye shall sanctify the year of the fifty year(s). And ye shall call a liberation in the land to all her dwellers. A Flowing is he. She shall be to you. And ye shall return a man unto his possession, and a man unto his family ye shall return. A Flowing is he. The year of the fifty year(s) she shall be to you. Ye shall not sow and ye shall not harvest her [plant] volunteers, and ye shall not cut-away her separated-ones. For a Flowing, he is Holy. She shall be to you. From the field ye shall eat her produce. In the year of this Flowing, ye shall return a man unto his possession. And when ye shall sell a sale to Thy neighbour or purchase from the hand of thy neighbour, ye shall not tyrannize a man his brother. Via the number of years after the Flowing ye shall purchase from thy neighbour. Via the number of years of produce he shall sell to thee. To the mouth of the greatness of the years ye shall multiply his purchase, and to the mouth of fewness of the years ye shall diminish from his purchase. For the amount of produce he will sell to thee. And ye shall not tyrannize a man his neighbour. And thou shalt fear from thy Gods. For I am Yehovah thy Gods.

This Jubilee is also a Sabbath of the land, though Sabbath is not used. No work is to be done on the fields. They are to be left alone. The following are included:

·         The shofar blast (singular) must pass throughout all the land.

·         Sanctification of the 50th year must be done at that time.

·         A liberation is called to all the dwellers of Israel, foreign slaves being excepted.

·         Every Israeli returns back to his possessions and properties. If this is not done, this Sabbath is not being kept.

·         Each Israeli must fear from Yehovah his Gods.

14.  The Land’s Sabbaths, With or Without Israel

Leviticus 26:23 “And if via these ye will not be-corrected to me, and ye will walk hostilely with me, and I will walk, even I, with you via hostility. And I will smite you, also I, seven concerning your sins. And I will bring upon you a sword avenging the vengeance of the Covenant. And ye shall be gathered unto your cities. And I will send pestilence in your midst. And ye shall be given into the hand of an enemy via My breaking for you the staff of bread. Ten women shall bake your bread in one oven. And they shall return your bread by weight. And ye shall eat and not be satisfied.

“And if via this ye will not hearken to Me, and ye will walk hostilely with Me, and I will walk with you via the heat of hostility. And I will correct you, even I, seven concerning your sins. And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons. And the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. And I will damn-out your high-places. And I will cut-off your solar-images. And I will give your carcases upon the carcases of your rollers [referring to a derisive name for idols carved from logs which roll, now called totem polls]. And My being shall loathe you. And I will give your cities destruction. And I will desolate your sanctuaries. And I will not savour via the savour of your sweet-savour. And I will desolate, I, the Land. And your enemies who are dwelling in her shall be desolated concerning her. And you will I scatter in the races. And will draw out a sword after you. And your land shall be desolate and your cities waste. Then shall the land enjoy her Sabbaths all the days of the desolation. And ye are in the land of your enemies. Then shall the land cease and enjoy her Sabbaths. All the days of the desolation she shall cease that which she did not cease in your Sabbaths during your dwelling upon her. And the remaining-ones with you and I will bring softness [versus resoluteness] into their heart in the lands of their enemies. And the voice of a shaken leaf shall chase them. And they shall flee the flight-of a sword. And they shall fall, and none chaseth. And they shall stumble a man upon his brother as from the faces of the sword, and a chaser is not! And there will not be to you a standing before your enemies. And ye shall be damned among the races. And the land of your enemies shall eat you. And they that remain in you shall pine away in their iniquity in the lands of your enemies. And even in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them. And they shall confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers with their transgression which they transgressed with Me, and even that they walked with Me with hostility. Even I, I will walk with them in hostility. And I will bring them into the land of their enemies–or then their foreskinned heart will bend. And then they will accept their iniquity. And I will remember My covenant Jacob, and even My Covenant Isaac. And even My Covenant Abraham will I remember. And the Land will I remember. The land shall be forsaken from them. And she shall enjoy her Sabbaths in her desolation from them. And they shall accept their iniquity because and because via My justices they contemned, and My statutes their being abhorred. And even also this–during their being in the land of their enemies–I did not contemn them and I did not abhor them to finish-off them, to break My Covenant with them. For I am Yehovah their Gods.”

Yehovah will choose the land over the Israelis if the Israelis violate on His land. Yehovah enforces the land’s Sabbaths. Israelis who are not in Israel cannot do many of the Sabbath commandments. Israelis enslaved in a foreign land cannot even cease on the Sabbaths of Yehovah.

15.  Gathering Sticks Can Be Fatal

Numbers 15:32 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day. And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron and unto all the congregation. And they put him in ward because it was not declared what should be done to him. And Yehovah said unto Moses, “Dying, the man shall die. All the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.” And all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him with stones. And he died as Yehovah commanded Moses.

Violating the Sabbath is a death-penalty offense, as bad as murder in Yehovah’s eyes. There is no sacrifice for such offenses. Does this apply to gentiles, or Jews at this time? The Sabbath cannot be kept at this time (without the Temple, priesthood and the sacrifices). Even the most fervent Hassidic Jew living in the Land of Israel can keep only a shell of the Sabbath, not the Sabbath. He can cease from his labours and refuse to tend his field every seventh year. He can keep his servants and animals from labour on the Sabbath. He cannot enforce the Sabbath stonings of other Israelis  nor do the Sabbath-required sacrifices, however. He must wait until the Temple is restored and the Land of Israel is freed from foreign Sabbath-inhibiting elements.

16.  Sabbath Sacrifices

Numbers 28:1 And Yehovah spake unto Moses to say, “Command the children of Israel and say unto them, ‘My brought-near-offering, my bread for my fires, a savour of My sweetness shall ye guard to bring-near to Me in his appointment.’ And thou shalt say to them, ‘This is the fireward-offering which ye shall bring-near to Yehovah: two perfect lambs sons of a year of the first year two to a day, an ascending-sacrifice always. The one lamb shalt thou do in the morning and the second lamb shalt thou do between the evenings, and a tenth of the ephah of fine-flour for a grain-offering mingled with the fourth of the hin of beaten oil, an ascending-sacrifice of always which is done in Mount Sinai for a savour of sweetness fireward to Yehovah. And his pouring is a fourth of the hin for the one lamb. Via the Holy-One he shall pour the pouring of strong-drink to Yehovah. And the second lamb shalt thou do between the evenings. As the grain-offering of the morning and as his pouring thou shalt do fireward, a savour of sweetness to Yehovah.

‘”And on the sabbath day are two perfect lambs sons of a year and two tenths of fine-flour, a grain offering mingled with oil, and his pouring, the ascending-sacrifice of Shabbat in his Shabbat upon the ascending-sacrifice of the continuance and her pouring.'”

This is commanded twice daily every day of every year, as well as every Sabbath of every week. If a single Sabbath goes by without the appropriate sacrifice, the Sabbath has been violated. Yehovah did not design the Sabbath only for individual use, but for all Israel.

The following paragraphs include the rest of the Sabbath passages, some not pertinent to an understanding of the topic. Pertinent ones will receive titles.

2 Kings 4:23 And he said, “Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? [it is] neither new moon, nor sabbath.” And she said “Well.”

2 Kings 11:5 And he commanded them, saying, “This is the thing that ye shall do. A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s house…”

2 Kings 11:7 “And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of Yehovah about the king.”

2 Kings 11:9 And the captains over the hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. The covert for the sabbath that they had built in the house and the king’s entry without turned he from the house of Yehovah for the king of Assyria.

17.  Cooking Kohath-Style on the Sabbath

1 Chronicles 9:32 And of their brethren, of the sons of the Kohathites are over the Bread of Faces to prepare every sabbath.

The Kohathites had to cook on the Sabbath to prepare the Bread of Faces in order to keep the Sabbath.

1 Chronicles 23:31 …and to offer all ascending-sacrifices unto Yehovah in the Sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts by number according to the order commanded unto them continually before Yehovah.

2 Chronicles 2:3 “Behold, I build an house to Name Yehovah my Gods to sanctify to Him, to incense before Him sweet incense, and for the Order of continuance, and for the ascending-sacrifices for the morning and for the evening, for the Sabbaths and for the new moons and for the appointments of Yehovah our God. This is to hidden-time concerning Israel.”

2 Chronicles 8:13 Even after a certain rate every day, offering according to the commandment of Moses, on the Sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the appointments, three times in the year: in the feast of unleavened bread and in the feast of weeks and in the feast of tabernacles.

2 Chronicles 23:4 “This is the thing that ye shall do. A third part of you entering on the sabbath of the priests and of the Levites, are porters of the doors…”

2 Chronicles 23:8 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath with them that were to go on the sabbath. For Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses.

2 Chronicles 31:3 [He appointed] also the king’s portion of his substance for the ascending-sacrifices, for the morning and evening ascending-sacrifices, and the ascending-sacrifices for the Sabbaths and for the new moons, and for the set feasts as written in the law of Yehovah.

2 Chronicles 36:21 …to fulfil the word of Yehovah by the mouth of Jeremiah until the land had enjoyed her Sabbaths. As long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath to fulfil seventy years.

Nehemiah 9:14 “…and the Shabbat of Thy Holy-One Thou madest known unto them, and commandedst them commandments, statutes and laws by the hand of Moses thy servant….”

Nehemiah 10:31 “And the people of the land are bringing ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell. We will not buy it of them on the sabbath or on the holy day. And we will leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.”

Nehemiah 10:33 “…for the Bread of the Order and for the continual grain-offering, and for ascending-sacrifices of the continuance, the Sabbaths, the new moons, for the Appointments, and for the holy [things], and for the sin offerings to cover upon Israel, and all the work of the house of our God.”

18.  Guarding the Gates on the Sabbath

Nehemiah 13:15 “In those days saw I in Judah [some] treading wine presses on the sabbath and bringing in sheaves and lading asses, as also wine, grapes and figs, and all burdens which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day. And I testified in the day wherein they sold victuals. There dwelt men of Tyre also therein who brought fish and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah and in Jerusalem. Then I contended with the nobles of Judah and said unto them, ‘What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us and upon this city? Yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.’ And it came to pass that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath. And of my servants set I at the gates. There should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.”

Nehemiah 13:21 “Then I testified against them, and said unto them, ‘Why lodge ye about the wall? If ye do [so] again, I will lay hands on you.’ From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath. And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and they should come keep the gates to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, this also. And spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.”

Guarding the gates is work, and is part of sanctifying the Sabbath. A Levite with this responsibility must work on the Sabbath.

Ezra and Nehemiah could not enforce the death penalty for Sabbath violation. Once the Kingdom of Yehovah was exiled, the right to enforce the Law of Moses was denied. The Sabbath cannot be kept without a way to stop violation.

19.  Sabbath Songs

Psalms 92:1 A Psalm, Song for the sabbath day. [It is] good to give thanks unto Yehovah and to sing praises unto Thy Name, Most High.

The Scriptures contain songs dedicated to the Sabbath.

20.  Sabbaths Wrongly Done Are Disgusting

Isaiah 1:13 “Bring no more vain oblations! Incense is an abomination unto me! The new moons and Sabbaths, the calling of assemblies–I will not be able! “

A Sabbath improperly kept is wrong, equal with not doing it.

Yehovah gave the Sabbath as a gift to Israel within the terms of the Torah. As long as the Israelis spurn the Torah, Israelis will not be able to enjoy the benefits of the Sabbath, and it will be as much a burden as it would have been a delight. The most Orthodox Jews work hard to rest on the Sabbath! They have many rules, regulations and stipulations that make modern Sabbath keeping more of a profession for the highly educated, and many of these regulations violate the Torah:

Deuteronomy 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of Yehovah your God which I command you.
